STRAWBERRY CROPS

EFFECT OF FRUIT ROTS. Strawberry fruits that are perfectly healthy may nevertheless disappoint the owner by failing to produce healthy fruit. One of the most common causes of loss is grey mould (borytris cinerea), which is particularly liable to appear in damp weather. The fruit fails to ripen properly and becomes covered with a dense grey mould bearing a large number of spores. The disease is difficult to cure, particularly in soft-fruited varieties. All affected fruits Ihould be destroyed immediately. but the plants should be left as they will be quite healthy. Thorough cultivation to keep down weeds, and the use of straw as a mulch will usually prevent the appearance of the disease.
