NOT YET WINNERS

OTAKI MAIDEN PLATERS. SOME LIKELY RUNNERS. The maidens engaged at Otaki today arc not a striking lot on paper, but three or four at least of them are ready for elevation. In this category may be Going Gay, Conversion, Hunting Scene, and The Image, with Myriam, who will be having.her first rate, also reputed to be a promising sort of galloper. Going Gay ghow’cd speed out in front at both, the Marton and Wanganui meetings, and it was only in the final strides that she went under to Shu at Marton. Those showing* will probably cause her to be sent out favourite to-day. Her pace is undoubted, and in her work at Trantham this week, she has given indication of her sticking on better than previously. Whether shn wins or not she is certain to raise the hopes of her supportters at some stage. Conversion, a Paper Money gelding running in the Autopay colours, is also very fast, and he may prove speedier than Going Gay as he gains experience. After being very nervous at the barrier on the first day at Wanganui and then being left he raced up near the front on the home turn, but could not then conic on. The race, as one might expect with a Paper Money, found bottom temporarily in him, and he was not prominent on the second day, but it was pleasing to note that he behaved himself at the barrier. He is not overbig, but he is stocky and he will win races. Hunting Scene, a colt half-brother by Hunting Song to Movie Star, was placed at his four last starts last season, and, though he did not show up in the first day’s maiden event at Wanganui, ho led for portion of the way in the Guineas on the final day. This is an improvement that requires only to bo sustained to land him an early success. The Image, a little-raced daughter of the Australian sire Spearhead, is no other than a full-sister of The Dimmer, winner of the Sydney and Perth < ups, as well as the star wcight-for-ago performer at an A.J.C. autumn meeting a few seasons back, so she has splendid breeding to commend her. She has had only four starts yet, but she caught the eye as she was finishing on w-ell in fifth place alongside Going Gav at Wanganui a fortnight ago, and a win is certain to come her way before very long. Myriam is a three-year-old filly by Lord Warden from the Kilbroncy mare Alyson, a sister to Rachel (dam of Rabbi and Kozan) and a half-sister to High Finance and Midian, and though she has not yet raced, she has a reputation for speed on the track. She will carry the jacket of her breeder, Mr. J. J. Corry. The only other hor.se in this field who has not previously raced is Merry Night, a five-year-old gelding by Night Raid from the Paladin—Bonaiia mare Menvale, and who will carry the colours of the Awapuni trainer J. P. Coyle, who recently acquired him from his breeder, Mrs. J. F. Studholme.
