“WE WERE WARNED”

THE CHURCH AND PEACE SERVICE AT WELLINGTON. | LORD GALWAY BEAJDS LESSONS. I Per Press Association. I l WELLINGTON, Sept. J. A’ special service was held in St. John’s Presbyterian Church this morning to mark the opening of Parliament. The lessons were read by the GovernorGeneral and the service was also attended by Viscountess Galway, Their Excellencies’ children, Cabinet Ministers, Members of both Houses of Legislature, Consuls, members of the judiciary and Wellington City Councillors. The sermons were preached by the Minister, Rev. J. R. Blanchard, who said: “Most people now see that it is regrettable we did not act differently in 1918. We were warned at the time of the economic consequences of what we were doing, and the years have made us regret that we did not been those warnings. A terrible shadow hovers over ug to-day and efforts are being made to prevent it darkening into night. W e say that w e are for peace, but why do we want peace? What do we intend to do with it if we get itf When we begin to want peace for no other reason than that the Kingdom of God is righteousness and peace, then, and only then, shall we begin to have it.’*
