FIRE ON STAGE

CURTAIN DESTROYED INCIDENT AT WELLINGTON COMPETITIONS. { Per Press Association. 1 WELLINGTON, Aug. 27. Some excitement was caused by a fire which occurred on the stage of the Town Hall a few minutes before one o’clock this afternoon during the Competitions, and destroyed the cur tain before it was extinguished. The men’s operatic solo was in progress, and Mr. Ronald Cowie, of Wellington, was on the stage. The first warning cry came from the audience, who were in a better position to sec the smoke than a number of competi tors and others waiting behind the scenes. The flames were licking up the flimsy material when Mr. Cowie jumped to it, and assisted by other men pulled it down to beat the fire out. Scorch marks on the floor and steps of the stage testified to the brief ferocity of the flames. Mr. Cowie sustained slight burns.
