RACING AT NEW PLYMOUTH

COMBINED HUNTS’ MEETING. KG MONT WANGAN I’ I ACCEPTORS. I Per Press Association. ] NEW PLYMOUTH, Aug. 23. TRIAL HUNTERS’ STEEPLES. (Of £SO; about two miles.)

HAWERA TRACKS all under water EXPERIENCE DURING WEEK. Evidence of how much the Hawera tracks were affected by the heavy rainfall during the week is furnished in an account which appeared in bbe Taranaki Herald on Wednesday, as follow: The state of the tracks at Hawera ; has become even worse since Saturday, and there was more water than ; u.nd visible in viewing the racecourse from the grandstand on Tuesday morning. In consequence there were no grass .tracks available for fast work, and it will be Saturday at least before they will be opened for galloping. The extent to which the local tracks have been affected by the wet weather during the past three months is unprecedented. At no stage in its lengthy history as a training centre has the Egmont course experienced conditions similar to those at present from the point of view either of the frequency of these downfalls or from the volume of the water on the ground. At one stage on Tuesday the course proper —submerged itself in many parts —encircled a huge sheet of water the surface of which was broken by only the railings of the fences around the tracks. Even the steeplechase course which is on slightly higher ground was almost completely under water, the section between the sod wall and post-ana-rails in particular being very bad. Low-lying parts of the Egmont property bore strange resemblance to Hooded rivers, the water in places being anything up to 12 feet de«p, which as it drained away formed swirling currents of groat force. With the combined Egmont-Wan-ganui and Taranaki Hunt Club’s meetings scarcely more than a. week distant, it seems certain that many of the local horses will bo rather short oi work, for in the last two months grass tracks have been available for galloping on less than half-a-dozen occasions. The sand track is a first-class wet weather track, but is not altogether suitable for galloping of an important nature. On Thursday Morning. Although the grass tracks have not yet been reopened owing to the wet weather, there was a little galloping at Hawgra on Thursday morning, when the sand was used by candidates for New Plymouth. Provided no further rain falls before Saturday, writes “Childers,” in the Hawera Star, the trial grass should again be fit for use then, as it is drying rapidly. Lowenberg (Monkley) and Fersen (Adlam) worked twice round at an easy pacd to run home the last three furlongs in -JO 3-5, with J'ersen going slightly the better. Fersen hit out most attractively and was pulling hard ov«r the final stages, Lowenberg also being under restraint. Both are in excellent order for New Plymouth. J’anioff (Shield ) and Just Off ( Era scy) were associated over a mile. Hie last six furlongs of which occupied 1.28 1-5. They went at a fast bat earl/, but were on terms at the close, when both appeared to be tiring. Just Off is improving steadily and his pros peels for New Plymouth look bright. Bantry (Chote) did hot impress ovei half a mile, occupying 57 1-ssec. He worked very lazily, particularly over the final stages, when he had to be kept up to his task. However, he would probably have gone much *.ioro freely in company.
