WESTFIELD SALE SHARP ADVANCE IN BEEP SHEEP PRICES IMPROVE [ Per Press Association. ] AUCKLAND, Aug. 21. Yardings well below the average brought a sharp advance in values for most classes of stock at the weekly Westfield sale to-day, prices in a number of cases being the highest since the corresponding period last year, when abnormally short yardings ruled. The opinion was genera) among graziers and dealers that cattle and sheep are making little progress owing to the shortage of feed and the colder weather, and that it will be several weeks at least before animals can he brought into marketable condition. Meanwhile prices arc expected to advance within reasonable limits. The offering of beef reached barely 450 head and included a number of fairly largo consignments of excellentquality cattle, the best coming from the Waikato. Competition was exceptionally keen and a sharp rise in prices was general, although extra choice ox beef was quoted at 29s per lOUibs, with other clashes in proportion. Values in some cases were well in excess of these. Hxtra choice ox boot made 29s per 100 1b; choice and prime, 25s to 28s; secondary and plain, 22s to 255; prime young cow and heifer beef, 24s to 235; other cow beef, 18s to 245. Extra heavy prime steers made £l2 to £l3; heavy, prime, £lO 10s to £ll 15s; 'lighter, prime, £9 5s to £lO Zs fid; light, prime, £6 to £9 2s fid; extra heavy prime young cows and heifers, 18 15s to £lO ss; heavy, prime, £7 to £8 10s; lighter, prime, £G to £6 17s fid; other killable cows, £4 to £5 17s 6<l. Although ihe supply of calves was fair, it included very fow heavier sorts, good runners being particularly scarce. Most of the offering hardly reached the light vealers’ standard, the bulk being calves just over the bobby stage. Bidding was brisk and an exceptionally bright sale at, improved rates resulted. What runners were penned sold well, a number realising over £5. Three to four-week calves were in strong demand and sold freely at prices about 30s. Runners made 50s to ll)8s; 5 cal era, 3Gs to 80s, and bob bies. 2s to Bs. Less than the average number of sheep was penned but. the quality was good in spite of the recent wet weather. Competition was strong throughout ami values advanced by Is a head in the case of wethers, while ewes improved still more, prices being fully 2s belter than those of a week
