DIVORCE INCREASE
PROVINCES OF CANADA. OTTAWA, July 1. There were granted in Canada by the Courts of seven provinces and by (he Dominion Parliament a total of 1106 divorces in 1934, an increase of 183, or 19.8 per cent, over the preceding year, and establishing a new high record for this country. Increases were noted in every province. Until 1924 Canada’s divorce statistics differed from those of most other countries in that a majority of divorces granted were on petition of the husband. In that year the trend changed, expedited in 1925 by a change in the law that removed certain anomalies that worked to the disadvantage of wives seeking their freedom, and by 1934 68 out of every' 100 petitioners were women. Figures from New Zealand for the six years from 1928 to 1933 show that from 52 to 58 per cent, of divorce petitioners were wives. In the United States wives are granted five divorces to two granted husbands.
