MATSMEN AT PATEA BRIGHT AMATEUR TOURNEY HIGH STANDARD 01.'’ SPORT. Adverse weather conditions most unfortunately affected the attendance at (he amateur tourney held by the Patea Wrestling Association last Alondav night in the Tc-wn Hall. The bouts were undoubtedly of a splendidly high standard and were, deserving of better support, the attendance bung very poor. Strict adherence to lhe programme and promptness of lhe bout, and lack of delay oetvvecii bouts reflected a very efficient management by the officials. There was not cue deletion from the scheduled matchings nor one single substitute. Both of the iwo star bouts, the first between Gibson and Couch ami the second between AlcCullum and Goodwin, were right up to expectations. In the former event, which was for a challenge cup, the pair were so even after the first four rounds that the referee had to order an extra rouud before he could separate the pair. Air. Glaring bold proved a very able third man m tho ring, his decisions throughout being very well received, while he is to be congratulated on his stand in twice ordering extra rounds tkn a definite decision might be reached i‘or the bout. Results of the whole programme are as follow: J. AlcFarlane (Wanganui) 5.3 beat G. Caicy (Palea) 4.3, by two falls. J. Head (Wanganui) 9.9, beat A. Smith (Patea) 10.5, by straight falls. A. Blair (Patea) i.'.7, beat A. Turf • bull (Alidhirst) 9.4 by one fall. C. Vernon (Wanganui) 10.7, beat G. Grey (Patea) 10.6, by one fall in the second round. G. Newiovc (Patea) 12.7, beat A Robson (Midhirst) 12.0, on points. J. Ivaumati (Patea) 13.7, beat P Kahu (Manutaai) 13.7, on points. Ik Clarke (Alanutahi) 12.7, beat C. Willis (Patea) 12.8, on points. MARTON CLUB FORMED ENTHUSIASTIC MEETING Over 30 wrestling enthusiasts attended the meeting held in the Alarton Jockey Ciub’s rooms last nignt to consider the formation of a wrestling club. Air. K. 11. Fowler presided ami gave au account of idle preliminaries that bad been carried out in connection with the introduction of wrestling to Alarton. It was unanimously decided to form a club to be known as the Marton Wrestling Club and to affiliate with the Rangitikei Wrestling Association. The following officers were elected: Patron, Air. A. tftuart, ALP..; prvsi deni, Air. K. 11. Fowler; vice presidents, Alc&sis. W. E. Simpson, 11. 11. Gaisturd, A. Way and N. Crabb; secretary and treasurer, Air. S. B. Ab«-i; executive committee, Messrs. A. Todd, It. Bland, J. Dickson, G. Fitches, W. Jackson, A. Barr, A. {Smart, W. W ebb, IL Ormond, C. Aitken, J. Hart, J. Jen: sen, T. Waldron and officers ex officio. The subscription for the remainder of the season was fixed at 3s 6d, which will admit members to the first tourna meat. Arrangements are to be made by the executive committee for holding the first wrestling tournanient in the Civic Theatre, Alarton, ou Tuesday, ►September 10, which will include a pro fessional ami several amateur bouts. The president, secretary and Air. R. Bland were appointed a match committee. AJessrs. A. Todd, A. Smart, J. Hart, R. Bland, J. Jensen, W. Jackson and the, president were appointed to inspect and report on the best means of electing the platform. Air. Robert Wittaker (Utiku) was appointed referee. The next meeting of the general committee will be held on Thursday, August 29. Tine meeting concluded with a vote c-f thanks to the chairman. TAUMARUNUI TOURNEY N.Z. WELTER TITLE RETAINED The King Country Wrestling Association executive are to be congratulated on the best house aud perhaps the most interesting and successful programme they have so lar organised. There was a record attendance in the Theatre Royal at Taumarunui, on Saturday, and the arrangements showed a decided improvement on those of previous tournaments. Taumarunui has now a full-sized ring saiti to be one of bile best in the Dominion. 'The staging is 24ft. square and the ring is 18ft. from roj e to rope. The amateur events kept the public well entertained till 9 p.m. when, the big event was staged. This was the professional welterweight contest for the New Zealand championship. A. Newton, of Hamilton, the holder of the title, was challenged by H. Woolstoa, of Taunarunui. Each contestant sc cured one fall and the holder retained the title on points. It was the chai lenger’s first professional bout and he certainly made a very creditable showing against a more experienced mat man. It was a contest of skill against skill in which the speed of Woolston Counter-balanced the greater physical j advantages of Newton.
