ADVICE TO THE BOARD CANTERBURY FARMERS’ VIEWS I Per Press Association. ] ASHBURTON, Aug. 6. A conference of representatives ol Farmers’ Union executives and agricultural and pastoral associations ol .xorth, South and Alid-Canteroury, was neld in Ashburton to-day to discuss tne frozen meat industry. The conlerence lasted live hours, and the dis cussion was in committee. It was later announced that the following resolutions had been carried among otiiers: ’lliat it be a recommendation to the electoral committee to bring betore the board the advisability of prohibiting the snipping of misiiapen and damaged carcases due to faulty packing; that tne board allot killing quotas on a weekly instead of a monthly basis; that tne board watch careailiy tne distribution channels for our frozen meat in nd on to ensure independent distribution channels being maintained (the disappearance oi independent Smithfield channels tvould have tne effect of New Zealand producers having no alternative marKCt); that the meeting urges on the companies operating in Canterbury, the desirability of cooperation, with the object ot reducing killing costs during slack periods, viz., the commencement and closing of tiie season; that the boaid make it compulsory -tor ewe mutton for export to oe graded into two qualities, tne board to set the standard; that the board investigate the desirability of making two grades out of the present second grades owing to the wide variation in the quality of the present second grade; that tne board investigate fully- the transport of fat 'stock l'» freezing works arid, if necessary, refer the question to the Coinmission of Agriculture with a view to a full investigation of the anomalies arising from. “free” railway stations; that the board give consideration to the rebate question where it is not possible for sheep to be railed to the works; that tne board bring a judge from Home to judge export iamb competitions throughout New Zealand and lecture to farmers and graders on London requirements.
