RIOTING IN CRETE
MARTIAL LAW DECLARED WINE-WORKERS ON STRIKE SURRENDER AFTER FIGHT (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) ATHENS, Aug. 5. Martial law has been declared in Crete as a result of disturbances following a strike of wine-workers, who sacked the administrative offices at (Sandia, and looted gunsmiths’ shops. Two destroyers, and also aeroplanes, which have been sent to assist the Government, have been ordered by wire less to stay at the island of Milos. 'Che casualties for one day were sin killed and 40 wounded. Continuous ringing of church bells incited the people to revolt. General Bakopoulos was wounded in the fighting. He gave the strikers two hours in which to surrender, and they did so before the expiry of the time. The trouble was due to a nuinbvz of the populace joining 600 strikers, until the strike movement threatened to assume a revolutionary character. General Bakopoulos arrived from Canea with a strong force, speedily restored order, and opened discussions with the striker''.
