WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

UPPER WAITOTARA. The August meeting of (ho Upper Waitotara Women’s Institute was held as usual on Thursday. It was a beau tiful day and there was a largo attendnco of members and friends. Owing to the absence of the president, who had not returned from Auckland, the vice-president, Mrs. L. Allen, took the chair. The meeting opened in the usual way, after which business was transacted. Members were invited to attend a birthday social at Kai Iwi. The motto, “True friendship is like prosphorous, plainest seen when all is dark,” was read by Miss'N. Allen. Mrs. Tomlinson played a pianoforte solo which was much appreciated. Mrs. Menofy then gave a most interesting talk on the work and effects of the League of Nations, which was most attentively followed. 'l'he points competition, “Best Novelty Bouquet,” was well entered for, and there were some really clever and novel ideas shown in the entries. Mrs. Menofy, who judged, awarded first prize to Miss B. Cowan, Miss N. Allen being second aud Miss M. Chcsswas third. The afternoon tea was very much enjoyed, the hostesses being Mesdamcs Kobertstein; T. Cowan and Jonct', and Alias Joyce Kobcrstein After tea a treasure hunt caused much fun and was won by Mrs. Bell. Miss B. Cowan won a guessing competition, after which a very pleasant afternoon was brought to a close in the usual manner. A number of books and magazines were handed t the secretary to be forwarded to the Karioi Forestry Camp.
