Meteorological Office, Wellington, Monday, Aug. 5, 4. p.m. General Situation.—An intense storm area still extends across the Tasman Sea and New Zealand. Pressure has commenced to rise over Eastern Australia. Forecast.—Winds: Northerly, strong to gale force, backing io westerly and later to south-westerly in the far south, and southerlies extending over most of the Dominion within the next 24 to 30 hours. Seas (New Zealand waters): Rough to high. Eastern Tasman Sea: strong north to west winds to gales, backing to south-westerlies tomorrow; seas high. Weather: Unsettled and boisterous, with rain in most districts, and further heavy falls with rivers flooding in western areas from Taranaki southwards. Thunderstorms likely in places. Temperatures mild, but becoming colder during to-morrow. The New Zealand Friends’ School, St. John’s Hill, report for 21 hours ending 6 p.m. yesterday: Bright sunshine, nil. Rainfall, .47. Shade temperature: Maximum, 59 deg. Fahr.; minimum, 38 deg. Fahr. Time of sunset (Wanganui) To-day: 5.3 p.m. Time of sunrise tomorrow: 6.50 ahn. Phases of the moon for August:—First quarter.
