WANGANUI FIXTURES SATURDAY’S RESULTS. CHAMPIONSHIP SHIELD GAMES. (By ••Spectator.’’) Ideal weather prevailed on Saturday for the games in continuance of the last round for the Wanganui Football Association’s Championship Shield, and there was a good attendance. Ou Victoria Park, Thistle, playing one short, were just good enough to secure tin odd goal in nine, after a very evenly contested game. Athletic were three goals behind at one period but they pulled themselves together and the scores were reading four all with both teams flat out for the lead. On Williams Park Eastbrooke prevailed over Rangers who did not field their strong est eleven. Tho first half was fairly even with the ’Brooke holding a god advantage. Thistle 5 v. Athletic 4. Thistle.—Chesnutt, Puddle. Upton, Davis, Da-shfield, Whiting, Mackie, W. Kidd, A. Hidd. A. Thompson. Athletic . Rounthwaite, Thomson Barber, Archibald, Humphrey, Thomas, Barron, E. Wilson, Crumgley, K. Wi.son, Cunningham. Athletic were defending the tennis court end. and they were soon called on to clear, the ball going to Thomas who sent E. Wilson away. The last-named crossed perfectly but K. Wilson wajust out of reach, and the ball went the reverse way to Mackie. Making ground, Mackie sent the ball over iron) the wing to A. Kidd who met it with a first-timer and Rounthwaite was well beaten. Keeping up the pressure Thistle were soon further ahead when the ball wont out to the right again and Mackie accepted nicely. Working infield he sent in a left-foot drive which cannoned into the top corner of the net with Rounthwaite at full length. Athletic made an effort and forced a corner. From the kick Crumbley had hard luck. At this, stage Athletic were entirely without combination, their team work was deplorable, and it occasioned no surprise when Thistle secured the had of three goals when W. Kidd walked the ball into the net.

This reverse was evidently the required stimulus for Athletic and their play opened out in wp'l combined movements wit'll Humphrey forcing play in the half-line and E. Wilson excelling in fast forward work. They opened their scoring account when Crumbley received and deflected nicely to E. Wil son, who was away quickly in top gear. He swerved in and finished th? movement with a good shot which had Chesnutt well beaten. Play then went from Davis to Mackie to A. Kidd, bit: Thomson cleared. Mackie received and tested Rounthwaite, who was nearly beaten by the sun in his eyes. How ever, Kidd eventually sent past. Thistle came again and Barber hesitated and allowed Mackie to secure. Thomson again cleared. Plfty went down to Thistle end but Cunningham crossed too hard. Not to be denied, however, Athletic hovered around Chesnutt an<i R. Wilson was responsible in adding number two goal for them when Chesnutt handled faultily and the bal glanced inside the post.

From the kick-off away came Thistle. Dashfield placed well forward and Mackie. ru«hiug in boat Rounthwaite to it, and flicked the ball into the net, adding number four for Thistle. Athletic again spurred themselves on and play hovered around the' Thistle goal, and Puddle and Upton made >ome good clearances. After the interval play ranged' raji/lly from end 1o end. With Chesnutt right on form, ano Rounthwaite having several “lives.” Athletic at last broke away and Cun ningham availed himself of an unexpected opportunity. Going down the centre he secured unmarked and his shot was right, reducing Thistle’s lead to one. From the kick Thistle came through but Thomson cleared to E. Wilson, who placed nicely to Crumbley and the latter was away on his own to score the equaliser with a well-placed shot. Athletic defence now bad a gruelling time as Thistle attacked in full strength iu an almost overwhelming effort to attain the lead, and Kidd and Mackie were giving Rounthwaite a hot period. Oncq Athletic made a spectacular breakaway and Crumbley was practically through the defence but his parting effort lacked sting. Towards the finish Thistle gradually gained supremacy and a nice movement ended in Mackie scoring the winning goal. Play ended in Athletic territory after a most interesting game. Mr. G. Langslow was the referee Eastbrooke 4 v. Rangers 1. Eastbrooke.—-H. Stokes, Ward. Tay lor, Cooper Jones, Wilson, Mclnnes, Gray, Heath, Cavaye, Quinn. Rangers.—Dew, Ho'kin, Massay. Del low, Gibson. Kay, Fowler, Hoskin, Rnsling, Bales, O.sen. Rangers were first to attack and Bates took advantage of a mos-kick, the ball being cleared at the expense of a coiner. Midfield play followed until Heath received in a handy position and placed the ball through the posts. From the kick-off the ball went out to Olsen, who made ground on the left until Jones robbed him of pos session, and sent out to Quinn who in turn went away and put across nicely to Heath who shot hard. Dew saved, but Heath following in fast scored number two.

Roused over this reverse Rangers rose to the attack. Ward, was haro pressed to concede a corner, and from the ensuing melee a penalty was awarded Rangers for an infringement, Bates took the spot kick and made a success of it. Again Rangers attacked and Stokes left his goal to clear, so that Rusling coming through found himself presented with an open goal. This was 100 easy and to prove ils opposite, his shot went high over. To offset this, however, Cavaye performed the same feat at the other end. After the interval Eastbrooke had a firm grip on the play and in spile of bad shooting in their forwards Heath scored a further two goals. Hangers sadly missed the stout defensive work o p IDuke and Tasker. Mr. J. Ramsay was the referee. Juniors. Marist 2 v. Arainoho 0 Marisls were more dangerous in at tack, although on the whole Arainoho had equally ns much of the play. Mr. W. Turner was referee. Technical 3 v. Rangers 3.
