ON HASTINGS TRACKS

PREPARING FOR TO-DAY. THURSDAY’S GALLOPS. The training tracks at Hastings on Ihursday morning were slower than on luesday morning, states the Hawke’s Bay Herald. the course proper is in great winter order for the annual race meeting un Saturday. Provided no more rain falls i he going will not be in the least holding. rhe first to get going were a trio engaged in the puraue on Saturday from C. J. Stowe’s stable, consisting of the hak-sistex to Gainsfid, by Gaiter Blue the Merry Roe colt and the rising two-year-old by Siegfried. These three were given slow work tu come down the jtraiglit at three-quarter pace. Cotsiieid, who has two engagements .his week-end, but will in alt p.obability eontest the hurdles iu lieu of the steeples, was given strong work on the sond. War Parade (E. Dcslandes) was sent over three hurdles again to give a neat and clean display ot straight hurdling. He is to have his first hurdle race on Saturday, but at present may fail to see twelve furlongs out against the more experienced horses. Mahora Grand (Thompson) tame home the last three furlongs of lie. pace work in fljsee. to move freely. Sabatini (A. Corner) was galloped on the plough, being the only noise to I work OU this track. The last seven ' ‘urlongs of ones round he ran in 1.41, W very fair effort for a hurdler. Kukumea (Barnett) and Shu (H. Marsh) were given a working gallop over four iurlougs to register 564 secs. Both could have done better. Father’s Choice (8. McNaughton) sprrnted three furlongs in 39) and when m the loose going appeared to flounder slightly. Koyal Feast i K. Marsh ) was given I

jan ea>y task when sent half a mile lo | run that distance in 56|secs. This i gelding appears nunc the worse lor his two races at Trcntham, where he dead- | heated for third the last day. i bhenanikida (J. Leach) finished two j lengths ahead of Lady Wessex (8. Mc- | Naughton) at the end of seven in L39£. The former handled the going the better. Throughout their mile gallop Joy Stick (Barnett) was ahead of Peggy Defoe (R. Marsh) eventually to have a three lengths’ lead at the finish in 1.54. Hunting Cal (H. Young) had to be ridden right out with hands and heels t beat Tidal Song (H. Callinan) overhalf a mile run in 54secs., which was one of the best times for hacks registered over this (list: |co for the morning. Cawbcen (J. Leach) and Royal Bengal (F. Baker; were companions in a working gallop over the same distance in JGtlsecs. 'i he latter went much the better of the pair and appears to handle this class of going tu perfection. Trackman (R. Marsh), Second Gear (H. Young; and Hard Times (S. Gooch) were abreast at the end of half a mile in a shade better than 55secs. Hard Times, who got the best of the jump-off, was going the best of the three at the finish. Maine (McCarthy) and Mona Lisa (S. McNaughton) ran a pleasing five furlongs in 69secs. without either being asked to give of their best. Two open flying candidates engaged on Saturday in Hest (J. Olsen) and Slippery (H. Young) were given a trial together over four furlongs. The pair were wide out all the way and at the fii." th Slippery was a neck to the good in 53}secs., the best of the morning. Morning Quest (F. Baker), Gninvale (J. Leach) and Bly gain (H. Callinan) were companions in a half-mile gallop in 55secs. All three went pleasingly. With a light weight in the saddle, Hukemanu (lid four in 54, which is a decided improvement on recent efforts.
