WAITQTARA fire monthly meeting of the Lppei Waiiolara Women’s institute was held as usual on the first Thursday m the mt.ntii, Airs. Annabell presiding. Ihe meeting opened with (lie singing of the "Ude to h'rieudsbip,' alter which the president welcomed the members and two visitors from Hawke's Bay, Airs. Ernest Annabell and Alias Boyie. Likely compttitions for the next nine mouths were proposed and alter much discussion were finally arranged for. "A Novelty Bouquet ’ was the one chosen for next mo nth. i'bis mouth's best loaf of white bread was won by Airs. W. Cowan senr., Mrs. Bert Annabell 2 Airs. W. Bell J. Airs. Bert Annabell won a competition, guessing the most correct names of cabvs, after certain clues had been given. Miss D. Jones gave a recitation, which was much appreciated by all. The "Bring and Buy” stall was quite a success and will help along the institute funds. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Airs. 1. Chesswas. Airs. Francis, Airs. W. Chesswas and Miss Al. Chesswas. Airs. Annabell returned thanks t° all who had assisted in any way, after which the singing of ih e National Anthem brought a pleasant afternoon to a close.
MAXWELL MEETING The July meeting was piesided over by Mrs. Morrison, the attendance being not as large as usual owing to much sickness in the village. An olficial visit was paid by members of the executiv-e committee, Mesdames Brine, O’Reilly and Alillen being present. Airs. Brine congratulated Alaxwell on having won the Challenge Banner at the recent exhibition and also upon having won the potato tre-phy. The beautiful banner was proudly displayed upon the wall and was much admired. Airs. Brine was presented with a sheaf of tingitana The points competition, "Something New from Something Old,” was won by Airs. *J. Darbyshire and Miss Alorrisou, Airs. Woodley 2 and Airs. Gorrell 3. Jam-jar of flowers: Airs. 8. Hughes and Aliss Atorrison, 1 equal. Alembers were reminded that the institute dance would be held next Tuesday, and that the proceeds would be in aid of hall-building fund. The hostesses for August will be Mesdames L. Davis, Dobie, Gorrell, Harting and Aliss Dane. Air. Cox will give a spring garden talk, to which the children belonging to the Garden Circle are invited and they arc also invited to enter a pot plant, for competition. Airs. Carpenter will give a floral demonstration. A novel and what seems to be a very practical way of augmenting the hall-building fund was explained by Airs. Luty. Each farmer in the district be asked to keep back one bobby calf and rear it. failing the calf a lamb would do. At a given time they would all be sold and the prceeeds added to the fund. The idea was considered a very sound one and was adopted. The institute asks all the farmers in the district to give this their ’earnest consideration. Airs. Brine gave a most instructive talk on first aid, carrying us c-n from where she left, us in her last talk.
Afternoon tea, much talk and community singing brought a very happy afternoon to a close ami concluded by singing the National Anthem. MEETING AT KAITOKE Kaitoke Women s Institute held its July meeting last Thursday, Airs. R. Bates presiding. The afternoon passea very pleasantly and there were a num ber of visitors present from sister institutes. After the general business was over Airs. Brine (Wanganui Federation president, spoke a lew cheery words to the members and was pi«sented by little June Burston with a posy of spring flowers, posies were also presented to Aliss Young, Mrs. Bates and Airs. Cauldwell, Airs. Rush (,Araiiiono- gave an interesting demon stration on papier mache work anu also on decorating the finished articles. There were a number of Kai toke schoolchildren and they gained valuable infe-rmation on finish mg their various vases and bowls. The best gingerbread cake was won by AJrs. Uwles, with Mrs. Gordon secund. The best article from one yard oi cieloiine was won by Airs. Hunt, Aliss Scott second and Aliss Pritchard third. Just before afternoun tea was served there was a parade uf old hats worn by members and visitors, which causeu conisderable amusement. The prizes went to Airs, Uwles fur tjie prettiest and Airs. Al. Laird lor thu runniest. Competitions for next month arc. Three pieces of shortbread and a pickle jar of spring flowers, the demon stration being organdie work. The hostesses for August are Alesdames Snauks, Ryder, Burston, Hunt and Pollock. The National Anthem closed a very enjoyable afternoon. Will members please note that next Saturday is an open evening ami the\ arc asked to attend and bring their I'nends. All are assured of a jolly time.
