Sydney newspapers feature the arrival ul the Aluons. Speaking al the otlicial welcome by the Rugby L'nion, the chairman, Mi. Hill, and the well-known iniernuiioual Cyril Towers, emphasised that the Maoris had done a great deal towards enhancing New Zealand’s great loeiball rcpuiution. Air. lahivvi, replying, said: “t)ur boys are full ot pep. We are going to make the games as bright as you want them.” The co-manager, Air. W. J. Wallace, said; “The buys have promised that they will throw the bail about and they will keep their word.” Nvpia added; “We know you lihtthe spectacular game and wc arc going to play it.” J. C. Reedy vvuu admiration for his leadership ot the huka, which always arouses great interest in Australia. Many spectators displayed gieat interest in the Maoris’ practice run, being particularly impressed by the speed of the forwards. The Maoris’ first serious test will be against Queensland o-n Saturday. (Queensland has selected a strong team, containing nine Australian representa lives —Bennett, Lewis, McLean, Hayes, Biriiiiugham, Bonis, Ritter, Doneley and Whyait. Critics generally agree that if the Maoris make a showing against this side the tour will be a great success. The complete team is: Full-back, F. Vincent; I hi-ee-quaiters, D. McLean, E. Hayes, N. Ward, J. Kirwan; live-eighths, Lewis; half back, G. Bennett (captain); forwards, Birmingham, E. Bonis, J. Ritter, B. Doneley, V, Wilson, K. Suter, F. Wnyatt, D. Nicholson. Reserves; 11. Stumm, A. Wildman, P. Dixon, E. James. There is general regret that Stumm failed to make the side, as he leaves for Orford shortly as Queensland s Rhodes scholar. Doneley is a pheno nienal goal-kicker. He has scored 100 pointy this seusG-n and 100 toi Queensland in three seasons. The Queensland Rugby Union has not decided whether lu make the July
20 match versus an Australian fifteen or versus Queensland. Everything depends on the showing u-f the visitors this week. Thu standard of the Maori teams in the past is the reason for the great public interest and Nepia’s men will be feted in Queensland. The first game, against Warwick on Wednesday, will be harder than at first imagined, the pack containing many big forwards, hard rucking farmers who play like supermen on the liard ground. Warwick has already beaten a Brisbane team containing seven inter-State men this scasc-n.
