AUTUMN FLOWERS

DURIE HILL SHOW. The members of St- Barnabas' Church, Durie Hill, held a delightful autumn flower show in ihe church hall yesterday afternoon and evening. The stalls were most artistically arranged all round the hall and down the centre. There were many beautiful specimens of the stately chrysanthemum, graduating from creamy white to the deep tawny shades. Other attractions, in addition to the blooms, were the decorative exhibits, including baskets of flowers and berries, mixed bowls of cut flowers, posies, bouquets and floating bowls, also the children’s exhibits, of dish gardens and floral work. The collection of vegetables was equal to anything shown at larger shows and included some huge pumpkins. There was also an excellent display of home industries. A work stall placed across a corner contained sewing of all kinds, novelties, fancy work, knitting and useful articles, and was > in charge of Mesdames S. E. Nicholson and J. Newsome. The stewards were Mesdames McElwain and Owles, Messrs. Green, Powle, W. J. Gillies and Rev. Tye. Mr. McElwain was secretary and Air. Owles assistant secretary. Afrs. Tye acted as hostess, and those who dispensed an enjoyable afternoon were Afesdames Lonsdale, Green, Wansbrough, W. ,T. Gillies, Ratliff. Afisses Lonsdale and Powle. The Rev. Tye, in welcoming the visitors, said that the people respon-< sible for the display deserved a hearty vote of thanks, and specially mentioned the secretary, Air. McElwain, and his assistant, Air. Owles, the members of the Suburban Horticultural Society, who- had helped considerably, and the wives of the vestrymen, who had provided the afternoon tea. Air. Tye said he was delighted that they had started a little show on the hill and he saw no reason why, in a community like that, they should not be able to continue holding them. In speaking of the culture of flowers he thought that thoes people who were genuinely fond of flowers and took joy in cultivating them, they were getting very near to religion. Afr. Hope Gibbons, who was introduced by Rev. Tye, thanked the vicar for extending the invitation to him to open the show. He expressed similar views as the Rev. Tye and said that people who work most and do most are the happiest people. He complimented the organisers of the show and referred to the exhibits, especially the children’s section, and praised the good work being done among the young folk in Wanganui by the promoters of the Children’s Gardening Circle. He gave a brief account of garden suburbs he had seen abroad where they could grow flowers for every month c-f the year and he thought there was no reason why the same kind of thing could not be done here- He wished the organisers every success. Among those present for the opening were:—Airs. Hope Gibbons, Afrs. L. Follett and Aliss Follett, Rev. Canon Williams, Airs. W. A. Tzard. Alias Afontgomery Aloore, Mrs. W. Poynter, Mrs. E. Poynter.
