CROQUET SEASON ENDS

WANGANUI CLUB The closing day of the Wanganui Cioquet Club was held on Saturday afternoon, when there was a good attendance. The president, Mrs. A. Crawford, extended a welcome to the Mayoress (Airs. N. G. Armstrong), and said she was pleased to see so many present. Ihe club was fortunate in having had an excellent season. The weather had been good except for the North Island tournament. Mrs. Crawford read a message from two old members, who were unable to be present, Air. and Airs. Pilkington, who sent love and best wishes for the success of the clu b. After presenting the trophies, the Mayoress thanked the club members for their kind invitation to be present and said it had been a great pleasure ro her to attend the function. She congratulated them upon the successful season they were about to close, and to the winners of the various prizes she offered her heartiest congratulations and expressed the hope that all had enjoyed the games and compel it ions, whether winning or losing. ‘‘The time is fast drawing near when I shall cease to be your Mayoress, ” said Airs. Armstrong, ‘‘and J would like to take this opportunity of thanking you for your kindness and consideration during the past four years and 1 hope my successor will be as happy among you all as 1 have been. It has been a wonderful experience for me meeting so many hundreds of women, the presidents and members of the vaiious organisations the church workers of all denominations, Girt Guides, welfare officers and charitable workers, staffs of schools and members of different sports and games, and many others. To all these women

the city owes a debt of gratitude for all they are doing for the welfare of the people of Wanganui. I wish you all possible health, happiness and prosperity in the future. Mrs. Crawford expressed regret that they were going to lose Airs. Armstrong as Alayoress, a position which she had filled with honour. She had at. all times been most courteous and pleasant and had done all in her power Io help in every possible wav. I hree cheers were called fpr the Mayoress and “For She’s a Jolly Good j Fellow’’ was heartily sung. : On behalf of other clubs the Rev. ■lye paid a tribute to the club, to the president, Airs. Crawl ord, to the captain, Airs. Len Bassett, also to Airs. Tilley and her staff of ladies, who had been responsible for the excellent arrangements for refreshments throughout the season. Airs. Len Bassett (captain), thanked the players for their co-operation, and especially the B grade players, who bad always been so willing to help in every way for the sake of the club. Ihe tea conveners and helpers dispensed an enjoyable afternoon tea on the wide loggia of the pavilion, the long table being centred with a bowl of autumn foliage and gold chrysanthemums. The Mayoress was wearing a tailored suit of jubilee blue with scarf of plaid taffeta in blue and white tonnigs, smart black hat upturned at the back, and musquash fur coat. Airs. Jarvie. and the first player to win the new Cuthbertson Cup was Alls. J. Blennerhassett, one of the original members of the club. Airs. Jarvie’s trophy was won by Airs. AlcClymont, and a trophy presented by Airs. Torstonson, of Palmerston North, to be competed for, was won by Air. Jarvie; runner-up (cup presented by Air. Cuthbertson), Airs. H. C. Price. The club weekly doubles for the season;—Jarvie hoops, A grade: Mesdames Jarvie and L. E. Bassett. Silver buttons, intermediate grade: Ales•lames G. 8. Simpson and I. E. Newton.
