ON WANGANUI RIVER

CLASSIS EIGHT-OAR RACE. BPEOD-BOAT CHAMPIONSHIP. This afternoon a combined regatta •is being held at Aramoho to decide both the rowing and speed-boat championships. The senior eight-oar event is to be held over a two-mile course, •finishing at the Wanganui Motor-boat Club’s pontoon, and the junior eights will race over the same distance for the Aulsebrook Cup. Eight-oar racing •has become more popular in Wanganui recently and this is possibly due to the fine performances put up by the Wanganui representatives winning the interprovincial championship last year and acquitting themselves very well in Australia by rowing second in the Centenary championship and winning the Kerr Cup. A ladies’ four-oar race will be held over a half-mile course and speed-boat racing will provide thrills for the rest of the programme. The interoroviucial eight-oar crew to represent Wanganui in the eight-oar championship at Dunedin on Easter Saturday will be announced at the dance which is io he held in the Aromoho Boating Club Hall this evening. The Helena Cun event, which is the main speed-boat race, will be run over a ten-mile coarse of six laps and the starters are Mis»s Wanganui. Miss Ethel (III), Pagan and Spitfire. Another race for the Cuthbertson Cup will consist of three heats each of two laps, the starters being Pagan. Spitfire. Cyclone, Brendon, Kah&ma, Ferro, Aotearoa and Whoopee. The senior eights will be contested by three crews. Wanganui, Union, and Aramoho. During the past two weeks all the crews have undergone a strict training and a great struggle for supremacy is anticipated. Union have won the event seven times oat of nine, losing to Aramoho in 11)32, while after winning the race by a wide margin last year the light blues were disqualified for going through the wrong cylinder, and the race was consequently awarded to Aramoho. The following times of starting the events is as follows: 2.30 p.m.—Head-of-the-River eight. 2.45 p.m.—Ladies’ race. 3 p.m.—Junior eight. 3.15 p.m.—Helean Cup (blue ribbon speed championship). 3.45 p.m.—Cuthbertson Gup (three heats).
