At the inquest on IDavis the police stated that on his release from Bathurst Gaol last year, detectives obtained employment for him with a city firm and he promised to reform. The firm was very pleased with Davis’ work, but subsequently he commenced to rob his employers and was arrested. The jury recorded a verdict of suicide with no blame attachable to the gaol officials. The coroner said that Davis was probably overcome by remorse.
A Sydney message on March 15 stated:—A prisoner on remand, George Henry Davis, aged 46, clerk, was found hanged in his cell at Long Bay Gaol. Davis was taken into custody this week on a warrant for his arrest on a charge of having stolen £3 from the Putaruru Pine and Pulp Company (New Zealand) Limited. He was charged in the. Police Court on Wednesday, when he was remanded till to-day. A warder on entering the cell found Davis swinging from a ventilator, having used his necktie and towel as a rope.
