PATEA

BOROUGH COUNCIL. No trouble other than slight flooding at the hydro was experienced during the heavy rains and floods, reported the electrical engineer (Mr. J. (_). Cunningham) at. the monthly meeting of the Patea Borough Council last night. Those present were the Mayor (Mr. F. Ramsbottam) and Councillors C. R. Honeyfield, A. T. Christensen, F. Naismith.* T. Scott, F. S. McKenna and J. Haworth. me electrical engineer's report stated: — “Hydro.—This station has run without any trouble, but owing to the water supply being low during the greater part of the month the units show a decrease over those of last year. On. the morning of the 21st, a heavy downpour of rain occurred and water found its way down the tunnel through the entrance and flooded the floor to a depth of about four inches. No damage was done to the plant, but owing to the cable duct being flooded the cables had to be removed and dried out. The plant was in service again at the usual time. To avoid a similar happening a deep drain is to be dug to turn any storm water away from t>he entrance. “Diesel. —'This station has not been used during the mouth, but had a total running time of two hours to ensure it being ready in case of necessity. “Bulk Supply.—The supply from this source has been continuous and no interruptions have occurred. “The figures for the month compared with those for the same month last year are as follow:—Hydro, 6388 (8000); bulk, 32,197 (28,461); diesel, nil (nil). Total, 38,585. (36,461). Ao increase of 2124 units over the same month of last year. “Water and Drainage.—Approximately 1,232,700 gallons of water were pumped for a consumption of 3522 units compared with 1,353,450 gallons and 3887 units for February, 1934. A decrease of 345 units and .120,750 gallons. The bores still, continue to give a good flow and no trouble has )>ppti experienced in this direction. The tower ladder has been painted and t'be painting of the tie rods will be. proceeded with during the month and also anv exposed iron work. Several experiments were carried out with an air lift in the old bore and it was found that while water flowed fairly freely when the air was applied it rapidly fell off, which definitely shows that either the slots in the pipe are blocked or the water has gone from that particular strata. I have had an expert opinion on the matter and this opinaon is that both bores are drawing off the same stream. Improvements may be made m cleaning the bores by means of air and I intend to carry out some further work in this direction in the near future and will report more fully on the matter at a. later date.” CRICKET. Patea and Power Board played the only A grade cricket match in South Taranaki last Saturday, when Patea travelled to Haw era. The bad state of the wicket accounted for low scores by both elevens, resulting in a win for Power Board by 40 runs. With the bowling so erratic that balls rose at any angle, it was unfortunate that two such balls sent Bourke and Gibbs to the pavilion early in Batea’s innings, with two wickets down for two. S. Edwards kept his wicket up well, while four of Patea’s batsmen were sent back, Hamel being the only one to make a stand. Then L. Edwards took charge and ran up the total to 44 before his stumps fell to Galyer. Lend rum and Hughes made a handy stand against Patea’s bowling, but it was not until O'Dea came on that Patea’s defeat came about. Following are the scores:—
