The body of Edgar Whitfield, about 60, night caretaker employed by Caris Brothers, jewellers, of Hay Street, Perth, was found overnight at the rear of the shop with his neck broken and diamonds valued at £4OOO to £5OOO ! missing from the safe. ■ Whitfield was seen last night about 10 o’clock transferring the diamonds from the window to the safe in accordance with his usual custom. Later the police received a telephone message from an unknown man saying that he had heard a crash of glass within the shop. Their examination revealed Whitfield's body. There was evidence of a theft. and the police are of opinion that Whitfield’s neck was broken during a violent struggle with the burglars.
