WANGANUI ASSOCIATION CLOSE B TEAMS MATCH ST. JOHN’S WIN BY ONE GAME An inter-club match was played between Wanganui East and St. John’s B grade teams. Results were, Wanganui East players mentioned first:— Singles.—Russell beat Millen, 13 —11; Brooker lost to Walker, 5—9; Gilbertson. lost to Fennell, 5—9; Cowie beat Couchman, 9 —5. Wanganui East 2 sets, St. John’s 2 sets. Doubles. —Russell and Gilbertson lost to Millen and Walker, 10 —12; Brooker and Cowie beat Fennell and Couchman, 9 —6. Wanganui East 3 sets, St. John s 3 sets. Aggregate: Wanganui East 51 games, St. John’s 52 games. This match was very interesting owing to the singles finishing two sets all. Brooker and Cowie were playing well in their doubles to lead B—2, but Fennell and Couehnian made an effort to improve the position and managed to bring the score to 9 —6. Russell and Gilbertson were leading 4—l and botn playing well. When they led B—2, St. John’s were in a poor position, but Millen started to drive with pace and rush to the net and Walker stayed on the back line and lobbed. With those tactics St. John’s pair got game by game, eventually winning the match on the aggregate by 1 game.
