WANGANUI CLUB ANNIVERSARY DAY EVENTS | TWO INTERESTING RACES i Two interesting races were held bj members of the Wanganui Sailin' Club yesterday. A two-mile scratcl. event was won by the Rio in 22min 20sec, and the Breeze won a four-nule handicap race off the scratch mark ' requiring 40min. to complete the ; course. A strong west-north-west win" [ was blowing during most of the day | but eased as the afternoon proceeded Had conditions been more favourable another race would have been held. Five boat”, the Breeze, Velma. Va leta and Wee Wyn and Rio competed in the two-mile scratch event. The first four crossed the starting line to i gather with the Rio about 10 yards ■ behind. When the Shell wharf was , reached, the Rio was leading slight!} from the Wee Wyn, Breeze and Velma. The Valeta started too near the south bank and found it necessary to take another tack, losing considerable dis- ' lance. The Rio rounded the bottom buoy ahead of the Wee Wyn and Breeze which was followed three minutes latei 'bv the Velma. The Rio maintained her lead and reached the top buoy one ■ minute ahead of the Wee Wyn anc Breeze which rounded smartly. She I got between the buoy and Wee Wyn 1 and looked like getting into second | position, but the Wee Wyn was wel handled and maintained her slight lead I The Rio was forced to make a short i tack before reaching the finishing line I which she crossed ten seconds ahead of ' the Wee Wyn. Times were: Rio, 22inin I 20sec, 1; Wee Wyn, 22min 30sec, 2; j Breeze, 22min 4086*2, 3. I The 4-mile handicap race was sailed . in the afternoon on a strong ebb tide, which created a fair chop on the water. 1 The Sunshine and Velina, with four minutes start, got away together. Va- . leta was recalled after crossing the j line and as the result lost a full min i ute. The scratch boats Rio, Wee Wyn. and Breeze got away well, and kept well up to windward, making the most of the current and gaining considerably on the leading boats. The Valeta, go ing well, also gained on the leaders and was not far from the Velma and Sunshine when they rounded the bottom buoy in that order. The Breeze, which was the next, had made up over one minute at this stage. When nearing the top buoy for the first time all boats were bunched. Velma and Valeta rounded together and the Breeze, by jibing round, got ahead of the Sunshine. Rio and Wee Wyn both missed the buoy and were forced to put about. The Breeze quickly made for the north side and, by the time the Shell wharf was reached, was just behind the Valeta, whi'eh had overtaken the Velma. Soon afterwards the Breeze gained the lead, and there "was no further change of position until the run back. On the run the Breeze drew away and the Wee Wyn, which had been last overhauled, the Sunshine, Velma and Rio. Times were: Breeze
