DEATH OF TWO CHILDREN

CHARGES AGAINST DRIVER OF CAR 1 Per Press Association. 1 NAPIER, Jan. 21. George Leslie Houlton, driver of a car which collapsed over a bridge near Toinoana on Saturday night, resulting in the death of his two children, was charged at the Napier Police Court this morning with being intoxicated while in charge of a car, and that he did cause their death. He was remanded for a week. The inquest, which was opened for identification purposes, was also adjourned for a week. A Press message from Hastings published yesterday stated that a seven year-old boy, George, and a six-months-old baby, Annie, children of Mr. and Mrs. G. Houlton, Kahuranaki district, were killed when a car driven by the father crashed through the railings of a small bridge on the Tuki Tuki Road, three miles past Clive, and plunged into the stream late on Saturday night. Mrs. Houlton was later admitted to the Napier Hospital with back injuries, but her condition is not serious. Both the victims of the tragedy met their death by drowning. The car, in plunging into the stream, overturned and pinned them beneath it when the hood collapsed. Nir. Houlton and a daughter aged eleven years were uninjured.
