MARTON BOROUGH

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL GENERAL BUSINESS DEALT WITH (Special to “Chronicle") MARTON, Jan. 21. The Marton Borough Council met this evening, there being present: The Mayor (Mr. F. Purnell) and Crs. G. B. Gregory, T. Barton, A. Honeyman W. B. Langston, K. A. Williams, A. J. B. Sicely, J. D. Gorrie and A. A. Mclndoe and Mr. C. C. McDonald (town clerk). Correspondence Correspondence was dealt with as follows: The resident engineer of the Highways Board wrote relative to claims for subsidies for the period ended December 3.1, J934.—The letter was received. The Rangitikei County Council asked the council to make every effort to eradicate all hemlock and blackberry within the borough.—The Mayor reported that action had already been taken. The Health Inspector wrote with regard to stock on the property in Station Road.—The Mayor said it was not the intention of the council to take action if the nuisance ceased. The postmaster at Marton asked for a quotation for 16 tons of uncrushed coke delivery to be spread over six months if desired.—The letter was referred to the gas committee and manager. The secretary of the Wanganui Education Board advised that the board cannot in the meantime undertake to pay the annual charge of £6 for water supply for the Marton District School. —The board is to be advised that after March 31 it will be looked to for payment. Mr. H. J. Gould forwarded a subdivisional plan of Lot 7, Maunder St., and applied for the council’s consent. —The letter was received. A. D. Riley and Co. forwarded a print of the proposed lime tanks at the filter station, with instructions for slaking the lime.—Referred to the overseer. Gas Manager’s Report Air. Duncan AlacPherson, gas man ager, reported as follows:—Plant: All plant is working satisfactorily, no trouble being experienced during the period. A start has been made with the work of scraping the holder. Owing to pressure of outside work, this has not gone ahead as quickly as 1 should like, but 1 hope to have it ready for painting at an‘early date. Two purifiers have been changed, and the nigh quality and purity of the gas has been maintained without a break.

Carbonising Returns. —During the month 32 tons scwt. of coal were carbonised, yielding 430,000 cubic feet of gas, an average of 13,320 c.f. per ton. The amount of coke for sale per tun of coal carbonised was approximately sAcwt. Distribution; This department has been very busy during the past month. Thirty-six meters have been brought into the works from the district and tested; of this number 16 were replaced by new ordinary meters, 8 were replaced by new slot meters, the remaining J2, being in fair condition, were refitted. Five new services were connected. The main in Alexander Street has been extended and now goes round info Canteen Street. Two combinations, two refrigerators and one geyser were fitted. At the present time we have on band a considerable amount of work entailing the fitting of several cookers and other appliances. There are also a number of enquiries receiving my al tention. Overseer’s Report Air. W. R. Brant reported as 10l lows: During the past month lhe gen oral maintenance work has been carried out. All roads and streets received attention, water tables have been cleaned out on several streets. Seven water leaks on mains have been repaired. Two new services have been put in. An eight-inch pipe has been laid from the main to the storage tanks at the filter station and chloride of lime is now being used. Aletal has been spread on the side of t.hv road, and path at Stewart Street adjoining the Club Hotel property. Station Road footpath has been patched with as phalt. 'fhe reservoir is holding 19ft. •Sins, of water. The embankments are in good order. The contractors commenced the installation of lhe filter plant on Tuesday, January .15. Town Clerk’s Report 'l'he (own clerk reported that re ceipts for the month ending .January 19 amounted to £2371, including rates £899 19s 3d, Town Hall £7(l His, gas, consumers, etc. £221 5s 6'l, water fees and connections £34 7s 3d, rents of reserves £lB 9s Bd.
