MARTON

SWIMMING CLUB ANNUAL MEETING HELD The annual meeting of the Marton Amateur Swimming and Life-saving Club was held in the Jockey Club’s rooms on Monday evening. Mr Winsett presiding over a good attendance. Annual Report The president’s report stated inter alia: “It was not until the season was somewhat advanced that this club came into being; this very naturally precludes my giving any very elaborate resume of the season’s activities. In spite of the lateness of its inception, however, the club in the short time it has been functioning has shown, promise of vigorous activity in the coming season. . “There was but one carnival airanged by your club last season. This was an undoubted success; in fact the entries in all probability . exceeded those in any other carnival that has ever been held in Marton. There were over one hundred swimmers competing in the various events. As a further indication of the success of the 'carnival I may state that a clear profit of £3 Ils 2d resulted therefrom. I have no - hesitation in saying that the record entries were due to the activity of our secretary, who spared neither time nor labour in seeing that invitations were sent to and accepted by ail clubs within a reasonable distance of Marton. Besides entries in our own carnival, your executive was able to arrange that a party of members compete in the end of the season carnival of the Feilding Swimming . Club. Two of the members were* successful in returning with trophies. Tn the life-sav-ing branch of our club work, though we were not successful in obtaining any Royal Life-saving Society awards, pet on every Wednesday evening a class attended the baths and much good work was performed. “•Recommendations.— (1) That arrangements be made to hold club competitions on one night each week; (2) that a fund be built up to assist swimmers to travel to other centres to attend carnivals; (3) that a “beginners” class” for adults be organised for those who cannot swim and are diffident about attending the baths when open to the public. “Finance. —Tn conclusion, gentlemen. T draw your attention to the sound financial position of our club. Not only has the club increased the credit balance at. the bank but the duck-boards at the baths have been renovated and a raft provided. Financial Statement. Including a balance of £8 8s 8d from the old swimming club, the receipts amounted to £2l 4s 2d. subscriptions being £1 10s, Carnival takings £6 11s, and entry fees £4 14s fid. The expenditure totalled £ll 10s 9d; credit balance at P.O. Savings Bank, £9 13s, and cash in hand, fivepence; total, £2l 4s 2d.
