“MANY ARE CALLED”
ONLY 10 PER CENT. ACCEPT. AUCKLAND UNEMPLOYED. [ Per Tress Association. ] AUCKLAND, July 5. When the offer of employment on relief works in the Auckland city area was made to over 600 men now on sustenance, the number who expressed willingness to accept engagement was less than 10 per cent, of the total. This information was given at a meeting of the Auckland Boys’ Employment Committee. When a copy was received of the invitation sent to local bodies, social and other organisations interested in the unemployment problem to attend a public meeting in the Town Hall for the purpose of urging better treatment for the. unemployed, the committee decided not to be represented at ‘•he meeting. The chairman. Sir Joseph Smith, said that relations between the committee and the Unemployment Board during the past year had been very happy. The secretary, Mr. Gribble, said that ihe had received a statement from Mr. W. Slaughter, oflieer in charge of unemnloyment in the Auckland district, to the effect that every man on the unemployment register in Auckland City has ben offered work under ordinary conditions of relief. This .offer had been made to fill 609 vacancies on schemes undertaken bv the Citv Council in the city area, and of those men whn were on sustenance under 10 per cent, had accepted work.
