INDUSTRIAL CONDITIONS

MANY CHANGES EXPECTED LABOUR LEADERt’S ADDRESS ( Per Press Association. ] AUCKLAND, July 3. Addressing a largo audience in the Town Hall to-night, the Leader of the Opposition, Air, AI. J. Bavage, stated that after having completed a three months’ tour of the Dominion he wag returning to Wellington more convinced than ever that the people were expecting far-reaching changes to be made in industrial and living conditions during the present session of Parliament. The main problem to be dealt with by Parliament was distribution, and it seemed remarkable that statesmen the world over would discuss any subject under the sun but that one urgent aspect of our economic life. The New Zealand Parliament could and should give a lead to the world in that respect and the Labour group in the House was ready to play its part along those lines. A return of purchasing power to tho mass of the people by the restoration of wage, salary, and pension cuts, and the raising of relief pay to standard rates must be accomplished before anything else worth while could be attempted. The employment in productive and development work of all relief workers should be commenced immediately. There was no reason why every New Zealand citizen should not receive a standard of

living in accordance with the productivity of Dominicn industries. Dairy farmers, in common with all other producers who arc in difficulties, although producing more than ever before, were entitled to the earnest and immediate attention of Parliament. Those engaged in the manufacturing industries were entitled to immediate attention. A motion expressing thanks to Mr. Savage and confidence in the Labour Party and demanding the dissolution of Parliament at the end of the present session was carried with enthusiasm .
