The Wanganui Chronicle THURSDAY, JULY 5, 1934. NAZISM’S WEAKNESS

yHE weakness of Nazism is that it is based on deception. While calling itself a Socialist Party it has a Capitalist, and more, particularly a Cartel objective. In politics it is impossible to serve two masters. There is much simulation in the politics of every country, and those who shout down with the Capitalist and whose hearts bleed for “the people,” are less to be trusted than those who stand four-square for commercial integrity and the sanctity of contracts. The denouncers of the banks and the capitalists in New South Wales, for instance, proved expensive friends for the workers of that State. While tin-hare racing provided the politicians who love the people with more money than bank directors ever even sec by way of honoraria, the depositors in the New South Wales Savings Bank could not get their money back because Mr. Lang had socialised the reserves of that institution. Herr Hitler also loves the people, and his appeal is not a reasoned one, but an emotional one. By stirring up avarice and hatred he has come to power. It is a quick way to high place, but as Francis Bacon observed, the way to high place is by a winding stair. Hitler’s winding stair has taken him by way of the fighting funds of the steel magnates and others of that kind. He has received much, but he has also given much; but the much that he has given did not belong to himself. The masses have provided Hitler with the gifts that he bestowed. Small wonder that when he had accomplished his deception tar enough that those who had raised him to power by their efforts—inglorious though those efforts have been—should plot against him. Once again has been demonstrated the dictum of , bluff old Dr. Johnson, “Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel.”
