ULM RETURNS SAFELY FAITH IN AUSTRALIA EARLY MORNING START ( Per Press Association ). WHANGAREI, July 2. After several postponements due to adverse weather and following the receipt of a report last night of fairly favourable weather over the Tasman Sea, Air. C. P- Ulin, accompanied by Messrs. Allen and Boultofl, took off smoothly from the Ninety-mile Beach nt eight minutes past five this morning on the return flight to Australia, arrying 19,000 letters, 740 gallons of benzine, and 32 gallons of oil. The Faith in Australia was anchored on the beach overnight owing to the strong westerly wind which continued this morning, but Air. Ulm expected to pass into calmer conditions after about 200 miles. ARRIVAL AT MASCOT 150 GALLONS TO SPARE Received Julv 2, 11.50 p.m. SYDNEY, July 2. When Air Ulm’s ’plane landed at the floodlight aerodrome at Mascot at 7.10 to-night, one of his pals commented: “This Tasman crossing is quite 'commonplace with you, Charley,” and so it- appeared to most of the others who gathered to congratulate the crow of the Faith in Australia. Ten thousand New Zealand letters were loaded into the postal van and taken to tho hangar, while Mr Ulm, with his wife and other relatives, motored home to Vaucluse, overlooking the ocean which he had just crossed by air. Mr Ulm, when interviewed, showed no signs of fatigue. He paid a tribute to the assistance from Ale«sr* Ki>KGn and Alares, New Zealand and Sydney meteorologists, whose forecasts of tho weather conditions had been absolutely accurate. Bough weather with rain and winds had been experienced nt first, but conditions had improved later. “We flew low nt 100 to 200 feet most of the way until nearing tho Australian coast, and then climbed higher,” said Mr Uhn. The trip occupied 15 hours 35 minutes, and tho ’plane landed w’.th 150 gallons of pctroi in the tanks. Among many cordial messages received before leaving Now Zealand, was that from AT ; ss Batten, which was much appreciated. “I have great admiration for her as an av : atrix, ” said Mr Ulm.
