PROPORTIONAL SYSTEM 5 ABANDONED AT CHRISTCHURCH j [Per Press Association. 1 CHRISTCHURCH, July 2. i Proportional representation as the ; method at electing members of the l Christchurch City Council, was abanIdoned by the council at a meeting tonight. A resolution revoking the special order of 1928, by which the proportional system was adopted for council elections, was carried. Labour members of the council made it clear that their action was influenced by tho recent decision of the national conference of the New Zea land Labour Party, and the by-laws and Finance Committee was asked to consider whether an alternative system might be recommended to the council. The motion to abandon the proportional system was carried on the voices, tho only voice raised against it being that of Air. A. E. Armstrong, Independent Labour member. Airs. McCombs had opposed the motion, nut she was absent when the vote was taken.
