Bridge Evening. Mrs T, Alexander, Maxwell, entertained a large number of friends lust week at a bridge party, when opportunity was taken to farewell Mr and Mrs Douglas Morrison, who leave at the week-end for the Waikato, where they will in future reside. St. Peter’s Carnival. On Monday evening Mrs E. B. Cooke was hostess at a social evening given to aid the candidature of the Sunday School Queen in St. Peter’s Carnival. Competitions and dancing helped to pass a pleasant evening for the twenty guests present. Novelty dances were enjoyed, the Monte Carlo being won by Mr Malcolm and Mrs Uttley, and the statue waltz by A. Cooke and Miss McCadie. Competitions were won by W. Christensen, B. Chisholm and N. Thurston. W.D.F.U. Gardening Circle Members of the gardening circle of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union spent a delightful afternoon yesterday when they paid a visit to Mr and Mrs E. H. W. Bowntree’s lovely fernery at their home, Portal Street, Durio Hill. The visitors admired the artistic arrangement of the numerous varieties of ferns and plants, the miniature waterfall, stream and bridge, the hanging baskets and the many tiers of gardens built up w th punga trees. Mrs Rowntree conducted the party through the fernery, kindly answering the many questions and explaining the origin of the various ferns and rare plants. The guests were later entertained at afternoon tea and general conversation followed on maters pertaining to gardens, flowers, etc. Cheerful lires and vases of iceland poppies, flowering gum nuts and chrysanthemums beautifully arranged in the rooms, added to the pleasure of the guests.

Male Choir Social. Considering the counter attractions there was a good attendance at the social and card evening held by the Male Choir on Wednesday of last week. The winners of “500” prizes were Mrs Harle and Air Smith Polling, consolations going to Airs Carter and Air Johnston. After supper, dancing was enjoyed until midnight, Airs Gardner being at the piano. The ATonte Carlo winners were the Alisses Taylor and Hutton. Among those present were: Air and Airs L. Hunwick, Mr and Airs il. T. Harle, Air and Mrs G. Williamson, Air and Airs T. Bamber, Air and Mrs J. Brass, Mr and Airs P. C. Hamilton, Air and Airs J. Shaw, Air and Mrs H. R. Kirk, Air and Airs W. Herd, Air and Mrs W. J. Johnson; Airs A. Goldring, Airs J. Carter, Airs R. S. Murphy, Airs J. Seivers, Airs J. Cooper, Airs A. Stephens, Airs Al. Taylor, Airs J. Bauld, Airs A. Chapman, Airs H. Holmes, Mrs J. Walton, Mrs D. Whyte, Airs A. Norris, Airs Bayliss, Airs Davis, Aliss Alorrison, Aliss Taylor, Miss Hutton, Aliss Kirk, Aliss Robb, Aliss O’Connor, Mr S. Brown, Air H. Lee, Air A. Higgins, Air A. Richardson, Air Smith Felling. Correction. Owing to a typographical error in the advertisement of Armitage’s Value House, baby wood was shown at 13 balls for Is.
