RANGIWAEA WOMEN’S INSTITUTE

The monthly meeting of the Rangiwaea Women’s Institute was held in the Public Hall on Thursday, June 21. Mrs. H. C- Speedy presided over a good attendance of members. Blue, gold and white were chosen as the institute's colours. The Dominion Conference in July was discussed and Airs. Speedy was chosen aa the delegate to represent the Rangiwaea Institute. QUEEN CARNIVAL ST. PETER’S CHURCH. St. Peter’s Queen Carnival, which Has been in progress during the past month, is now drawing to a close, and premises to be a thorough success. This enterprise has been undertaken in liei of a bazaar this year, and as a result of the many functions held in support of the four candidates, not only have considerable funds already been subscribed, but a very large" numoer oi people have become interested in the contest. Great energy has been displayed by the various committees, and many fine and usotul articles have been presented jct competitions, and in this respect it is to be noted that some of these will be decided during the course of the i addy’s market on Friday and Satur day next, and all competitions will be finalised on the night of tne carnival dance c-n Tuesday next, July 3. Ali v-ho desire to contribute to the funds by having an interest in the competituns me advised not to delay. At the Paddy’s market in the Parisi Hall there will be a surprising variety of goods c-f ail kinds for disposal and men, women and children wifi be able to secure bargains of all kinds anc assist the church by their patronage next Friday afternoon and evening and Saturday morning. Fresn goods will be coming in every hour during the progress of the fair. Arrangements for the monster carnival plain and fancy dress dance, to be held on July 3, are well in hand, and supporters can be- assured c-f an excellent floor and splendid music. St. Peter’s orchestra is one of the finest l.’ttlc combinations in the district. The final function will be held in the Gonvide Town Hall c-n Thursday, July 5 when the winner of the Queen contest will be declared and the crowning ceremony will take place. The arrange meats for the crowning ceremony arc in the capable hands of Aliss Swan, and therefore a spectacular and interesting ceremony can be expected. Following the ceremony the hall will be clearec for dancing and the carnival spirit which has prevailed in Gonvllle during the past month will reach its climax in a happy and enjoyable finale..

SOCIAL AND PERSONAL Aliss Gibbons has returned to Wanganui from a long holiday spent in Wellington. Mrs B. Todd, Auckland, is a visito. to Wanganui. • ♦ ♦ • Air and Airs A. H. Freeman were Otaki visitors to Wanganui for the Eames—Whitcombe wedding. Mrs H. C. Jenkins, St. John’s Hill, has returned from a brief visit to Wellington. Misses Winifred and Alyce Hare, who have geen the guests of Aliss Dorothy Handley, Maxwell, have returned to Wellington. Mrs F. Handley and Aliss D. Handley, Maxwell, were hostesses on Monday at a bridge party in honour of Airs D. Alorrison, who leaves shortly for the Waikato. Air and Airs G. R. Ireland, of the Waikato, are staying with Air and Airs W. Alorrison, Maxwell. Airs H. Bourkc, of Ballarat, with her small son, will arrive next week by the Wanganella, on a six months’ visit to her parents, Air and Airs R. O. Allomes, College Street, who will motor to Wellington to meet their daughter. Airs W. P. Hitchcock, of Fendalton, Christchurch, who has been visiting her parents, Air and Airs W. Whitcombe, Caius Avenue, for the wedding of her sister, will return to her home to-morrow.

A vote of thanks and appreciation for the co-operation shown by the Wanganui branch of the W.D.F.U. at the recent interprovincial conference at Wanganui was passed at a meeting of the Wanganui executive of the Farmers’ Union yesterday morning. A motion was carried by acclamation. * * * • An Adelaide artist, Aliss Cordelle Mason, has returned to Australia after an absence of two years abroad. While in England Mr?§ iMason was in charge of the revival at Barnard Castle of hand-quilting organised by a committee of representative English women. One of Hiss Alason’s duties was to collect all the traditional designs of the district i«to book form. She was responsible for the drawing of the pattern on the materials for the women to work, for this using tailor’s chalk. An old barn was turned into a workroom where twenty women of all ages worked for a weekly wage, making hand-quilted bedcovers, cushions, coverlets, curtains, etc., for sale in London shops. The scheme worked so well that the quilting industry has become self-supporting.
