SCULLING

WORLD TITLE MATCH PEARCE TO ROW BARRY. A match, for the world's sculling title has been arranged between the holder, Bob Pearce, the Australian, now resident in Canada, and the English sculler. Bert Barry, for £lOOO a side, and the match will take place in Canada in September (says the Australasian). Barry was champion in 1927, when he defeated Major Goodsell, the Sydney sculler, at Vancouver, and held the honour without a challenge until May 31, 1930, when he was easily defeated by Ted Phelps in a match for a stake of £lOOO, being the only race for the championship in which two English scullers have been the contestants. Phelps lost his title to Bob Pearce last year, when the Australian won by nearly a quarter of a mile on the Lake Ontario irnurse. Barry will have to be a much improved sculler if he is to have a chance of taking the title from Pearce.
