WRESTLING

DETTON DEFEATS CHEUNG BRIGHT BOUTS AT STRATFORD WANGANUI SUCCESSES. 7 Bright wrestling with a fair propors tion of fireworks, if no roughness as - the term is understood among profes- . sional wrestlers was seen at the Strat- , ford Town Hall on Tuesday night when I Dean Dctton defeated Wong Buk r Cheung by two falls to one. The house , was only fair, but those who attended I were well pleased by the display in both j preliminaries and main bout. The pro--1 fessional contest was characterised by i bewildering quick work by both men > and an appealing variety of holds, both i spectacular and apparently painful. : The bout ended amid high excitement in the sixth round when, after a series of flying tackles and “drop kicks,” Dctton took the deciding fall. Four amateur bouts comprised the preliminaries. In the first C. Connor (Wanganui) 10st. 71b., defeated B. Johns (Hawera) list., in two straight falls, both secured by body presses after the round had been in progress only a short time. The heavier Hawera man noticeably lacked condition. The second bout between Cullen (.Stratford) lOst. 71b., and C. Matson (Wanganui) lOst. 71b., provided better entertainment. Alatson obtained the only fall in the second round with a press from a scries of headlocks. The men were evenly matched in strength, but Matson was obviously the more experienced and had the best of exchanges in every round. Pilcher (Hawera) list. 61bs, and G. Podjursky (Wanganui) list. 71b., gave perhaps the best amateur display of the night. The first two rounds went without falls, although the Wanganui man had undoubtedly the best of the exchanges with punishing headlocks and presses. On several occasions the Ilaxyera man just managed to slip out of situations from which a fall might easily have resulted. In the third round he suffered heavy punishment, particularly from a vicious scissors to the head which he was unable to complete with a wristlock. The referee broke the hold and the Hawera man lasted the round. The decision was a draxv. Spirited wrestling was also seen in the contest bctxveen Couch (l.’atea) list. 71b., and 11. Bartlett (Wanganui) 12st. Again the Wanganui representative was too strong and obtained falls ' in the first and third rounds, on the first occasion with a body press, hax - ; ing escaped Couch’s headlocks, and on the second with a press following a heavy dump.
