Perry (England) defeated Tucltey (England), 6—2, 6—2, 5—7, 6—o. Nishimura (Japan) defeated Gandar Dower (England), 4 —6, 7—5, 6 —4, 6—l. Lott (U.S.A.) defeated R. Hughes (England) defeated R. Turnbull (England), 6—o, 6 —l, 6—o. Kopman (Australia) defeated W. Menzel (Germany), 6 —2, 6—3, I—6,1 —6, 6—3. Andrews (New Zealand) defeated Wilde (England), 4—6, 6—3, 6—l, 6—4. Merlin (France) defeated Metaxa (Austria), 6—3, 6—4, 6 —4. Crawford had the honour of opening in the centre court programme against the Polish ex-ball bov Tcloczynski. The Australian mercilessly pasted Ms opponent’s backhand and won easily._ McGrath began stronglv against Wood and held set point at 5—4 in the first set. Thereafter McGrath's backhand was erratic and Wood was incomparably superior in volleying and never at a loss to produce a stinging service. Perry was nrost impressive and defeated Tu'ekev comfortably. His foreland volleying was perfect. Stoefen’s service against Grandguiliot' is the only shot likelv to cause Crawford v/ony.
