Crawford had the honour of opening in the centre court programme against the Polish ex-ball bov Tcloczynski. The Australian mercilessly pasted Ms opponent’s backhand and won easily._ McGrath began stronglv against Wood and held set point at 5—4 in the first set. Thereafter McGrath's backhand was erratic and Wood was incomparably superior in volleying and never at a loss to produce a stinging service. Perry was nrost impressive and defeated Tu'ekev comfortably. His foreland volleying was perfect. Stoefen’s service against Grandguiliot' is the only shot likelv to cause Crawford v/ony.
