ST. JOHN’S CLUB SEASON’S ACHIEVEMENTS COMMITTEE’S ANNUAL REPORT The St. Jc-hn’s Bowling Club will hold its annual meeting on Monday evening next, when the 27th annual report and balance-sheet will be presented, as follows: The committee, in presenting inc annual report and statement or accounts, wishes to congratulate the ciub upon a successful season. Play commenced on October 7 under fair conditions and closed on April 14. Membership.—The membership of the club consists of 114 active and five honorary members —a total of 119. Centre Competitions.—The ciurj competed in all centre games. The open singles tournament was won oy E. finalists being members of the club. The open pairs tournament was won by Clinkard and Kirkwood, who. repeated their last year’s performance. The club also won both trie Senior Shield and Nixon Cup without a loss. The Willis Shield is held by Wanganui Club. J. Glover represented the club in the champion of champions singles and proved the winner after a strenuous struggle. The Bannerette games continue to be popular ami several keen games have been piayed. The club held the trophy at the end of the season. The club was again well represented in the Christinas and Easter tournaments and several teams reached the post section play. Club Competitions.—All competitions were keenly contested and the match committee is to be congratulated on having them finalised in good time. The following are the results: — Full rinks: W. Harris, J. Williams, J. McMillan and H. Coombe; runnersup, C. Hunger, Cr. Mackay, L. Bassett, R. Armstrong. A Singles: J. Glover; runner-up, J. Kirkwood. B Singles: L. Bassett; runner-up, C. H. E. Rhodes. C Singles: A. Pepper; runner-up, G. Threadgold. Colts Singles: C. Boss, A Pairs: A. Stone and J. B. Jack; runners-up, W. Bcswick and AV. G. Herd. B Pairs: G. Threadgold and W. Bourne; runners-up, G. Smith and J. Baxter. C Pairs: C. Boss and A. Bateman. Handicap Singles: A. H. Benefield; runner-up, J. B. Jack. Fems: C. Leslie, A. Pepper, J. Baxter and J. Glover. Labour Day Tournament: W. Gordon, C. Barnes, F. Moffatt and A. 11. Benefield. New Year’s Day Tournament: Jl. Lloyd, H. Leggett, G. Puddle and G. Alurch. January 2: W. Cathro, J. Smith and J. Baxter. Old Members’ Day—This reunion was again revived and proved a great success. Owing to portion of the green being closed, a number of our own members were asked to pray away from home that day. We express our appreciation of the manner in which they accepted the position. The usual exchange of visits with Marton and Waverley Clubs were made and proved most enjoyable outings. The hospitality shown by both clubs was much appreciated. New Green. —Following on the recommendation at last annual meeting, the committee decided to proceed with the laying down of a third green. Negotiations were finalised with the City Council for the acquisition of a further area. Work was commenced in February anji the green is now ready for sowing. Well-organised working bees of club members have done yeoman service and the club is under a debt of gratitude to them for what they have accomplished. Without their enthusiastic efforts the proposition could not have been undertaken. In particular, we would like to mention Mr. B. Hewetson, who gave weeks of his time to supervision of the excavation of the green and whose services were of great assistance. Finance. —The finances of the club have been maintained in a satisfactory condition. The usual £3O was paid oil* the debentures, and evep. aner allowing for an expenditure of £37 on the now green, the bank overdraft is £5 less than last year. A perusal of the accompanying accounts shows that the expenditure has been kept Mil in hand. Obituary.—lt is with regret that we have to record the death of two of our members—Messrs. Jones and Lawrie. The club’s sympathy was extended to the relatives. Thanks. —The committee agarn wishes to extend the club’s thanks to Mrs. Cunningham for her attendance on Saturdays to dispense the afternoon tea and also to those ladies who on special occasions provided the refresnments. To the green superintendent, Mr. J. B. Jack, and to Messrs. Rhodes and Stanton we express our appreciation for the attention given to the green and its sur ro un di n gs.
