METROPOLITAN UNION THIRD GRADE COMPETITION. RAISED TO JUNIOR STATUS. POWNALL TROPHY SELECTION. The Wanganui Metropolitan Rugby Union, decided last evening that, as only two teams were left in the third grade competition, and there was little likelihood of the Marist and Pirate Clubs combining to form a team, the Kaierau and Technical Old Boys’ third teams be allowed to enter the junior grade competitions. Mr. J. Moye presided, and the following were also present Messrs. C. A. (Danielson, E. Naumann, A. Lockett, H. Whiting, A. Takarangi, R. Sewell, J. E. Bannister, J. Cotterill and W. R. McElwain. Junio.r representatives of all clubs concerned also being present. It was stated that Pirates had few players in the third grade, and, although they were willing to amalgamate, they preferred to retain the thirds to supplement the junior team. Mr. Lockett thought that the only thing to do was to classify the two remaining teams as juniors. Mr. Danielson stated that the junior games could be arranged to include the two teams. Mr. Moye: It seems to be the only thing to do. Mr. Lockett: It would be far better than allowing the teams to drop out altogether. On the motion of Mr. McElwain, seconded by Mr. Lockett it was decided that the Kaierau and Technical Old boys’ thirds be promoted to juniors. A discussion took place as to whether the Wavcrley players were eligible to play for the Metropolitan representative team against Taihape on July 14 for the Pownall Trophy. While it was agreed that the Wavcrley players had every right to be selected to play, it was considered that it would be better, for this year, to notify the selector that only Metropolitan players be picked. It was stated that Waverley would raise no objection if their players were not selected. It was decided that the team should be comprised of Metropolitan players, in view of the fact that it could be assembled easily for training, and that the Waverley Club be notified of the position It was also agreed that the Wanganui Rugby Union be asked to give a ruling as to whether Waverley players would be eligible to represent the Metropolitan. Union, seeing that players would be taken from the Wairoa 11 Mr. Moye said he hoped the matter would be discussed at the next annual meeting of delegates. The classification committee reported that Farrell and Sherlock had been regraded from third to fourth grade, but that no decision had been arrived at concerning Brougham and Cornish. Mr. C. Swan, the secretary, stated that ' satisfactory arrangements had been made with regard to an excursion train being run from Taihape to V anganui on July 14. The tram would leave Taihape at 8 a.m. and arrive at Wanganui at 11.45 a.m., leaving Wanganui again at 5.5 p.m. and reaching Taihape at 9.6 p.m. The match would be nut forward to begin at 2.30 o’clock. A letter is to be sent to the Wairoa Union asking if a team can be fielded at 1 p.m. for a curtain-raiser. In response to a request from the Rangitikei Rugby Union for alternative dates for the Wanganui-Marton senior representatives match at Marton, a letter is to be forwarded stating that the only available Saturday will bo September 8. The suggestion will be made that, if September 8 is not suitable, the match be played on Wednesday, August 1, or a Wednesday selected by Rangitikei. The Rangitikei Union also forwarded a letter from the Mangaweka Club, which offered to send a team to Wanganui on July 4 to play a curtain-raiser to the North Island trial match. Mr. Swan said he understood the Kaierau Club was willing to field a team The matter was one for the Wanganui Rugby Uinon to decide, however, and he expected to have further information later in the week. A report was received from Mr. K J. Crotty, who refereed a fourth grade match on Saturday, stating that he had been subjected to much abuse from a spectator. It was agreed that the matter be left to the supervision committee, ■who were authorised to act if neces’Vormission of transfer from the Kaierau Club to the Marist Club was given to Peina. The Kaierau Club stated that it had no objection.
