FIRST-CLASS CHEESE

WESTMERE’S SUCCESS PRIZES WON Al TWO SHOWS TOTAL OF 20 FIRST PLACES. Suppliers of the Westmere Co-opera-tive Dairy Co. have every reason to feel proud of tho entries of cheese made at the Waikato and Palmerston North shows recently, for no fewer than nine first places were won at Waikato, with one second and one third, while 11 first places were secured at Palmerston North. For a dairy company with 60 suppliers, covering an area of some 10 square miles, and an annual output of 400 tons the performance may be regarded as exceptionally good. Among the prizes won at Waikato were the grand championship banner, and the New Zealand championship. At Palmerston North the Clement Cup, New Zealand championship and championship of the Manawatu and West Coast were won outright. The obviously high grade of the cheese made by the company reflects great credit not only on the manager. Mr. C. S. Dickinson, but also on the suppliers who cart their milk to the factory each day, and Mr. B. Dawes, chairman of directors, and Mr. T. Ballingall, sccreSome time ago the company also won the Wanganui Harbour Board’s cup competed for by 11 dairy companies whose produce is graded at the port, marking the second occasion upon whicih it has been secured by the company. In the event of the cup being retained at the next competition, Mr. Dickinson, the mahagcr, will claim it for his own property. “Whatever the controversy regrading the quality of New Zealand cheese, there can be no doubt that Westmere is doing its bit towards improving the standard.” remarked a supplier to a “Chronicle” reporter on Saturday morning.
