Irish Gunmen
RAID ACROSS FRONTIER WAR MEMORIAL BOMBED (By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright) LONDON, May 7. The Evening News says that Irish Republican Army gunmen tried to blow up the war memorial in Armagh city before daybreak. They crossed the frontier in a car, bringing hand mines. They called at the house of Dr. Woods, telling him that he was wanted at an urgent case, and then covering him to stand by during the explosion lest the gunmen were injured. The granite steps were destroyed. The other mine failed to explode, leaving the great figure of Victory uninjured. The explosion rocked Armagh, rousing the inhabitants. The police attempted to communicate with the frontier guards, but found that the wires had been cut. The gunmen escaped.
