Public Body Trading. The Associated Chambers of Commerce is making a Dominion survey oi . public trading by local bodies, and in response to a request the Wanganui Chamber has forwarded particulars as to the position in Wanganui. Some criticism was levelled at the privilege I power boards had to trade in opposi- | tion to private traders and escape the | payment of income tax. The informai tion forwarded to the Associated Chambers was endorsedl. Centenary Air Race. The efforts of a special sub-commit-tee in Wanganui to attempt to raise £lOOO by subscruption as a prize to be offered to the winner of the Melbourne Centenary Air Race in the event of his flying the Tasman Sea and landing in Wanganui have been abandoned. This statement was made by Mr. A. S. Burgess at a meeting of the executive of t he-W anganui Aero Club last evening. He said that there seemed to be little i possibility of the money being raised. 1 Paparangi Dug Trials. Under showery conditions, the opening day of the Paparangi dog trials was held at Kai Iwi yesterday, when the long, head and pull competition was decided. First place was secured by Mr T. Riley’s entry, with Mr. M. N. Scott’s second, Air. Williams’ third . and Air. P. Forrester’s fourth. The short head and yard competition was begun, and, together with the huntaway competition, will be concluded today. Good entries have been received, and the competition is reported as being of a good standard. Mr. H. Scott, of Hawera, is the judge. Main Highway Bridge Closed Advice has been received by the Wanganui Automobile Association from the Waimarino County Council that the bridge over the Waitangi stream on the Bulls-Taumarunui Alam Highway on the north side of Waiouru will be closed to all traffic to-morrow, Wednesday, between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m., while the bridge is being removed to a new alignment. The bridge is about a mile north of Waiouru and past the Waio-uru-Tokaanu Road junction, so that it docs not effect the desert road from Taihape to Taupo. There is a detour just before Hihitahi, rejoining the main road at Tangiwai. This detour i route has two or three miles of clay section on an up grade travelling from Taihape. Die detour route will be signposted, and if chains are necessary a sign will be put up to this effect. Through traffic from north or south is advised to travel via Wanganui and Raetihi and vice versa. Wangauui-Raetihi Road. At its meeting last night the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce heartily concurred with the view taken by the Wanganui Automobile Association that there should be a joint conference of local bodies interested to bring the Wanganui-Raetihi Road up to the standard it merits as an important link between Wellington and Auckland. The proposal is that the City Council should convene the conference, which is to be representative of the Chamber, the Development League, the City Council and th Automobile Association. Air. A. S. Burgess said that he had nothing to say against the improvements which had been made on the road, but he would be sorry to see the work now in hand cease. Instead of shutting the camps up the department should establish two or three more. Not only were motorists penalised because the work was not being pushed on fast enough; the city was losing a great deal. Alessrs. A. IJ. Rankin and J. Goldstone were appointed to represent the Chamber when the conference is called. Road Transport. Prior to the recent sitting of the No. 5 District Licensing Authority in Wanganui that body forwarded an invitation to the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce to be represented. Under instructions from the president (Air. A fe. Burgess) a reply was sent thanking the Authority and pointing out that on this occasion there was nothing arising in which the Chamber was inte’ested, but that the Chamber would always be glad to receive notice of sittings of the Authority so that if the need arose it could be represented. At last might’s meeting of the Chamber. Air. Burgess said that it had taken sonic action with regard to services between Wellington, Wanganui and New Plymouth some time ago and had done good. It was desirable that whenever it was necessary the Chamber should be represented on these cases and if need arise, should give evidence. Its object should be to encourage services
to the city. The members of the Chamber present concurred in this view, and appreciation of the action of the No. u Licensing Authority in forwarding the invitation was V expressed.
