SANDON

TE KA WAV RUGBY SUB-UNION Competition games played on Saturday resulted as follows:—• Senior. Awahuri 17 v. Huia 5 Ohakea 8 v. Rongotea 6. Junior Oroua Downs 6 v. Huia 6. Sandon 30 v. Ohakea 0. The junior game, Sandon v. Ohakea, played at Sandon, was played most of the time with drizzling rain, Ohakea took the field with only 13 men and during the first spell held their opponents fairly well, the change over sounding with only three points against them. The home side, playing downhill and favoured with the breeze, kept Ohakea busy defending for the bigger part of the second spell, the final whistle sounding with the score 30 to nil. Sandon (blue) opened play and the green return was smothered and the green defence was tested. A free kick gave relief, Robinson finding the line at the centre. Murphy sent out a long pass, for the ball to be sent out to Grace but sound tackling stopped him well in the green twenty-five. The blues continued to press and Andrew spoiled a good chance by hanging on. Another scoring chance was lost with a pass to Grace being high. Wiggins relieved with a good kick. The blues pressed back and from a scrum L. Sanson sent on to C. Mullin for a try at the corner. P. Gedye missed the kick. The green forwards took place to the blue line and Wiggins had a “pot” shot but missed, Sandon forcing. The blues were making the game open but the wet ball was hard to handle. Half time sounded with play in the blue half.

Ohakea opened the second half, Signal receiving to find the line at the centre. Sanson sent out to Andrew, to W. Drew, the latter being hauled down near the green line. From a scramble K. Lumsden dived over. P. Gedye added the extra two points. Sandon continued to press, Wiggins doing a lot of working defending. A bout of passing among the blues ended with Grace being pushed out just short of the green line. The effort was repeated soon after with the same result. Murphy secured from a line out and scored. Gedye raised the flags. After an exchange of kicks Ellery broke through with the ball at toe, but lost control, W. Drew returning. A blue rush was nicely halted by Wiggins. Sandon continued to press and L. Sanson scored in a handy positino. Gedye again found the uprights. Good following up rewarded H. Henson with a try but Gedye failed with the kick. Alurphy was the next to score but the kick at goal failed. The final score was secured by W. Drew after a good handling bout among the backs. Air. L. Tattle controlled the game. RIFLE CLUB DANCE The Sandon Rifle Club have arranged a dance to be held on Afay 25, 1934. Patrons are assured of a good time. Full particulars' appear in the advertising columns of this issue.
