DISASTER IN NORWAY ’ CRAG CRASHED INTO FIORD VILLAGES OVERWHELMED By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright/ Received April 8, 6.19 p.m. OSLO, April 7. ■ Forty persons, including a family of :ine, were killed when a huge crag crashed into the Korsnaes Fiord, creatng three tidal waves which swept inland for half a mile. Two small fisb- ; .ng villages were overwhelmed. The ground is littered with debris »1 houses and boats, and it is feared that other villages aso were destroyed. A later message says that it. ! s be ‘ licved that over 50 are dead. Forty bodies were recovered in the village of Fjcrassa. The crag fell 6000 feet causing scenes so terrible that eye-witnesses i declared that they believed the day of ■ judgment had arrived. Tmity-foot waves hurled motor-boats and other vessels against houses, many occupants being entrapped in the wreckage. A great column of flame > shot up when the waves reached an electricity transformer. A mol her with three c’ .ildrcn in her arms climbed from a window on to the roof of a house, but. the rising waters swept them away. A father, carrying his son, ran up a little hill and held the boy up at arms’ length until he was submerged. The child was saved half-drowned. Residents dragged boats across the country and. rowed in the darkness that other villages also were destroyed. The walers subsided within 25 minutes. The disaster is the worst in Norway for 2(1 years.
