Sir Donald McGavin, of Wellington, was a weekend guest at Foster's Hotel Mr E. W. Kane, Clerk of Barlin* ments, left Auckland on Friday for Sydney by the Monowai. The Hon. H. A. Bruce, Minister of Works in the Queensland Government, who has been visiting New Zealand, left by the Monowai from Auckland on Friday for Sydney. Dr. L. A. Lewis, who has been superintendent of the Rotorua Hospital for some years, will leave by the Port Gisborne for England on April 28. He will be accompanied by Mrs Lewis. Captain IL W. Johnston, of the Wanganui Harbour Board’s staff at Castlecliff, who underwent a serious operation recently, is making satisfae* tory progress. Superintendent James Mcllveney, who will •commence retiring leave from the police force on will take up his residence in Auckland. He has been in the force for over 40 years, and was twice stationed at Wanganui. Mr D. M. Sanderson of London, arrived at Auckland by the Rotorua on Thursday in the course of a trip round the world. Mr Sanderson is a son of Sir Frank B. Sanderson, M.P., for Ealing. Week-end guests registered at Spriggens’ Hotel •include: Mr and Mrs Donavan, Mr and Mrs Hayward. Miss 11. Harris, Miss G. J, E. Hewitt. Alangamaire. Wheu walking from the Presbytery to the Home of Compassion shortly after seven o’clock yesterday morning Father La Croix suffered a stroke. He was quickly removed to the home where he received medical attention. Late last night it was reported that he had regained •consciousness and was progressing satisfactorily. Father La Croix is a popular member of the Wanganui Catholic clergy and beloved by all the parishioners. Bis many friends will wish him a speedy recovery to his good health and spirits. Air. W. L. Burgess, who has been kaitiaki (honorary treasurer) to the Wanganui Savage Club for several years, did not offer himself for nomination at the annual meeting on Saturday uight, and thereby relinquished a post which he has filled with distinction to himself and the club as a whole. The Ariki, Dr. G. J. Adams, referring to the Club’s loss, said that Mr. Bui gess, by his efficiency and courtesy, had carried out a difficult and sometimes thankless task in a very commendable way. Air. Burgess has been one of the mainstays of the Wan ganui Savage Club, and although he is not continuing in the office of treasurer he intends to take a full interest In the club’s welfare. Savage Kenneth Armstrong was appointed to the vacancy. Lieutenant Ernest Webb, conductor of tto Queen Alexandra Band and New Zealand’s champion soprano cornet player, was presented with an inscribed silver tray last night by Air. J. A. Nash, ALP. t acting on behalf of the Palmerston North Garrison Band. Lieutenant Webb played the soprano comet with the Palmerston Band at the recent championship contest in Wellington. and was instrumental in the band reaching the honoured position of champion of New Zealand. The presentation was made at the Regent Theatre. Wanganui, during a concert promoted by the Palmerston North Band. Air. Nash, who was introduced by Air. W. A. Veitch, M.P., referred to the services rendered the Palmerston Band by Mr. Webb and congratulated him on his capabilities as a soprano cornet, player. Colonel Whyte, chairman of the Palmerston North Band, spoke in a similar strain. Air. Webb suitably replied, saying that it had given him great pleasure to assist a sister band.
