Public Opinion
THE KINGDOM OF GOD Sir, —In my letter which appeared in your issue of 7th. inst., 1 am made to say “the kingdom of Israel (God’s Kingdom on earth) which does ‘not’ exist" to-day, ” etc. This, I think, is a typographical error; of course the Kingdom of Israel does exist to-day (Jer. 31.35-56) and just as surely the Kingdom of Judah docs not exist (Jer. 18.11). Yours, etc. — E. V. LAWS. Hon. Secretary., 8.1.W.F. 7, 1934. •BEEF AND BREEDS” Sir, —The interesting controversy that has been appearing in your columns concerning the merits of our beef breeds, lacks the evidence of the chief and most valuable witness. If our butchers could be induced to give their opinions on the subject, their evidence would be more reliable than that of the breeders, who are naturally prejudiced. While on the subject of beef, there is another matter besides breed, that a butcher may express an opinion on: I have heard it stated that Wanganui eats the worst beef of any city in New Zealand, is that so? There was one buyer of many cattle that once told me that whenever he visited Hunterville he always returned to Wanganui with a roast of Hunterville beef, as he could not be sure of getting real beef in Wanganui.—l am, etc., “RANGITIKEL” Marton, April 6, 1934. DOUGLAS AND THE COMMISSION Sir, —Your leading article in yesterday ’s paper says that Douglas *'positively dodged his A plus B theorem before the Monetary Commission,” etc. You are evidently unaware that Major Douglas did not explain his Social Credit Theory to the commission, but put before them some suggestions of things that might b** 'done to improve things a bit under the present financial system., His reason for doing this is explained in the following passage from his Auckland speech;
'•'The proposals which I placed before the commission at Wellington were subsequent to a correspondence which 1 had with them in which I made it clear that, in my opinion, the way to proceed in this matter was to investigate the defects of the existing financial system first. (Very loud applause.) It is the existing financial system which is on its defence, not any proposals that I have to make. (Applause.) 4 ‘Now the committee, with the perspicacity and keenness which commissions share with Scotsmen, said tn at they w’erc not prepared to pre-judge the matter —that they were not pre pared to admit that the existing finan cial system had any defects (laughter), and 1 did not feel that it was at al] my part to take exception to that, and I. said: “Very well, we will assume for the moment that the existing financial system is perfect (laughter), am! we will see what we can do io make everybody a little bit happier undei the present financial system and these are the proposals made on that basis.’ I think you will agree that this should be made public through yohr paper after your attack on Major Douglas yesterday. —I am, sir, yours truly, D B. April 4 JW4.
