WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
The April meeting of the Kohi Women’s Institute was held in ideal weather amidst very pleasant surroundings, Mrs. S. Hone having very generously invited the institute members to her beautiful home. The business part of the meeting was held in the dining room, where a record attendance had foregathered. The president, Mrs. Mountfort, welcomed those present, and the usual business was discussed. Mrs. Mountfort and Miss F. Powell were chosen as delegates to the annual meeting of the Wanganui Federation to be hold in Wanganui on the 18th inst. Arrangements for the second birthday party were discussedand it was decided to hold a social evening on May 30, the programme to be left in the hands of the committee. At the conclusion of the business an adjournment was made to the garden, which was greatly admired. The masses of flowers looked very gay in the bright sunshine, and the seats in the shade of the beautiful trees were very inviting. The tennis court was kept fully occupied, many enjoyable sets being contested by the younger and more energetic members. Ganics and competitions were entered into with zest. An exceedingly dainty afternoon tea provided by the joint hostesses, Mrs. S. Hone and Mrs. Morrison. made a pleasant break and was very much appreciated. The president thanked Mrs. Hone and Mrs. Morrison for their energies in planning and carrying out so successfully such a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon. Appreciation was expressed on all sides and the singing of “For They Are Jolly Good Fellows” and three cheers brought a memorable afternoon to a happy conclusion. The next meeting will be held on Mav 2, the competition being a nut loaf OPAKU. The monthly meeting of the Opaku Women’s Institute was held in the Opaku Hall at 2.30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 4. There was an attendance of 11 members. The meeting opened with the singing of the “Institute Ode.” Mrs. Davidson, president, occupied the chair, and the hon, secretary, Mrs. Hilliar, read the minutes of the last meeting, after which a silver spoon and fork were persented to the baby daughter of Mrs. A. Warner, it being the first institute baby. Mrs. Walton, president of the Patea Women’s Institute, gave a very interesting demonstration of scagrass stool making. A vote of thanks, proposed by Mrs. Davidson, was carried with acclamation. There was a satisfactory number of entries for the competition for a sponge cake with no butter. Mrs. Hughes was first, Mrs. Dwyer second, and Mrs. Miller third. The roll call, best humorous story, caused considerable amusement. The hostesses, Mcsdames Davidson and Dwyer, served a dainty afternoon tea. which was appreciated by all.
