ST. JAMES’ THEATRE Two of the greatest personalities on the American screen are co-starred for the first time in Afctro-Goldwyn-Mayer’s talking picture adaptation 61 F. Marion Crawford’s classic love story, “The AVhite Sister,” which opens to-morrow at the St. Janies’ Theatre. They are Helen Hayes, winner of the recent Motion Picture Academy award, and Clark Gable, universally conceded to be the talkie’s outstanding matinee idol. Aliss Hayes, last seen as the nurse in “A Farewell to Arms,” this time plays the role of an aristocratic Italian girl who on the eve of her wedding to a man of her father’s choice, falls in love with a young officer in rhe Italia.i air force. A clandestine romance results and the father, in a desperate attempt to call a halt to the proceedings, is involved in an automobile smash-up and dies. When the voung officer subsequently is called to the front and is I’-perled killed, the gi:l determines abandon the world and to shut herself up in a convent as a AVhite Sister. The intensely dramatic climax of the story occurs when the officer returns from the war and confronts the nun who had believed him to be no longer alive. The situation is said to bo the most stirring ever enacted by the talented Miss Hayes.
