AVONDALE JOCKEY CLUB

THE AUTUMN MEETING. review of prospects. (Special to “Chronicle.' ) AUCKLAND, April 6. It would, only be the customary thing of the Avondale Jockey Cluu held its autumn meeting to-morrow and on. Wednesday next in unfavourable weather, for the elements are nearly always unpropitious for fixtures at this tine big suburban course, lhe lields for to-morrow’s opening are first class and if by some unexpected chance the weather is favourable the fixture should be most successful, for there will be plenty of runners in the eight races. Totalisator betting at the meeting will be on the win-and-placc system. Thirteen remain in the prmeip d event to-morrow, the Foley Memorial Handicap, with that good horse Master Brierly at the head of affairs with 10.7, which is half a stone more than he carried so brilliantly at Ellerslie last Monday. His success on that occasion was achieved in meritorious fashion; one might almost say it was aa easy win, and it certainly was a comfortable one. An the roomy Avondale track with its long straight, favours the good horses. Jonathan is a solidly-built gelding, but his 9.12 may bother him, although like Master Brierly he is in rare form. Curie has w’on over the distance, having dead-heated with {Speedmint at Marton in the spring, and he may be tho most likely of the topweights. King March seems to have suffered a temporary lapse of form, with which it is possible that the fall he had at Ellerslie had something to do. Gay Broney was runner-up each day at Ellerslie to Master Brierly, so it is obvious that he will have to be seriously considered. Royal Artist is showing improvement, and Carfex is handily placed. Given the usual Avondale weather and a wet track and Baroscope would be the hardest to beat. Chief Cook and L’Allegro are both very well. The latter is nicely placed and now that he is older he should stay better than he did last season. Jonathan and Curie may be the fancied pair of tho trio over eight stone, and of the remainder the chances of Gay Broney, Royal Artist, Carfex and Baroscope arc highly assessed. Fine lields will contest the other events and altogether it is likely to be a splendid gathering. Horses in form for to-morrow's racing are the following:— 11.58—Rosebank Handicap: Brown Lap, Safe Bank, Sir Vai. 12.45—Avondale High-weight: Gigantic, United, Don’t Lap. 1.30 Chevalier Handicap: Lagoon. Wait and See, Gold Pocket. 2.2o—Foley Memorial: Gay Broney, Jonathan, Royal Artist. 3.s—Oakley Handicap: Coronilla, Life Guard, Keith Lu. 3.45: Railway Handicap.—British Columbia.
