TELEGRAPHIC CHARGES

EFFECT OF THE NEW SCALE CHRISTCHURCH EXPERIENCES. I Per Press Association. ] CHRISTCHURCH, April 5. Telegraphic bills of several Christchurch business houses have been increased, since the new scale of charges was introduced, by 10 to 15 per cent. This statement was made and widely supported at a meeting of the Canter bury Chamber of Commerce to-night in a discussion on the action of the Government in imposing the extra rate, which was criticised severely, several speakers describing it as merely a device to obtain more revenue. A suggestion made was that business firms would not pay this extra tax, and would bo obliged to make less use of the telegraphic service, so that the Department might actually lose revenue. All agreed however, hat tho now rates involved increased cost to business houses, to whom lower rates for shorter distances were of little value. It was send a telegram of protest to the Minister and nbc Io ask the Postmaster-General to make public tho revenue derived from telegrams last year, and also publish an estimate of the sum which would have been received if the present charges were in force.
